johnb: When you say an HDD recorder you could be meaning a Freesat or Freeview PVR, or a Freeview recorder with a HDD as well as DVD facility.
PVR's are dedicated to recording from the signal they receive, either Freeview via normal aerial or Freesat via a dish, but if your son decided to buy a recorder with a Freeview tuner and an HDD then he could also record from Freesat as well, this done via a lead from the Freesat boxes scart socket to similar on the Freeview HDD recorder mentioned.
In other words a non PVR recorder with an HDD is simply a recorder with a Freeview tuner, the recorder side capable of recording from anything, unlike PVR's which aren't!
That being said though, the cost isnt any less than it would be to purchase a Freesat PVR, although as aforementioned, its a device dedicated to recording from the satellite signal received and nothing else.

I would like to post a big THANK YOU comment to Briantist for the DAB coverage pages, having spent a good few minutes finding the services that I can tune to.
My aerial is a roof mounted west pointing DAB 5 unit and I can receive local staions as per the maps quite easily. My curiosity was roused because I can receive BBC Radio Notts with a signal strength of 54%, admittedly this sometimes breaks up but so what and I live 8 miles north of Doncaster!

wasnt the bsb squarial a white square sat dish that came the same time as sky started?
and eventually lost to sky in a vhs/betamax style war?
i believe sky bought them out and renamed themselves "british sky broadcasting"?
still see the odd dish but few an far between?

ian from notts: Actually, Sky Televison Ltd and British Satellite Broadcasting MERGED into one company, Sky didn't "take over". British Sky Broadcasting always had the original BSB investors on board and they divested themselves only when BSkyB became a PLC.
The squarial was not a dish, it was an active surface of receivers that acted as the LNB, a normal "dish" is a concave reflective surface that reflects signals into the LNB.

John Bryan: You are very kind, I am pleased to hear you find the DAB maps useful.

Mazbar: There's a page about the device here - Squarial - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - they were a good idea, but the traditional dish and LNB proved to be a cheaper option in the long run.

BSB days, the best book is this one - Amazon.co.uk: Used and New: Dished!: Rise and Fall of British Satellite Broadcasting .
