No, you cannot use a satellite box to receive terrestrial programmes.

I don't want to use a satellite box I have a freeview box. I want to know if an existing dish for sky can be use with the freeview box.Can I use a cable splitter and run one end to the sky box the the other to a freeview box and get the freeview channels.

You cannot use a Freeview receiver with a satellite dish, only an aerial.

You also cannot split a satellite signal from a dish, if you want to run more than one box you must use a dual- or quad-LNB on the satellite dish and have a cable to each satellite receiver.

john: Plugging a normal Sky box into "any" TV in effect makes that TV act purely as a monitor, and so any device plugged into it has to be capable of HD reception, which obviously a normal Sky box isn't.

The other point being, that HD data cannot be transferred from one device to another via a scart lead, and so if a TV is either of the HD ready type (i.e: doesn't actually have an HD tuner) or even capable of receiving Freeview HD signals, then it will only show an HD picture from an external source if the box plugged into it can actually receive HD, and is coupled to it using an HDMI lead between both.

Apologies if this in the wrong section but hopefully someone can help.

I've just moved in to a property and it currently has Virgin media set up. The block of flats I live in has a communal Sky dish on the roof and the cables running down to my balcony but no box installed internally. I don't want to use the virgin as I want to use my built in freeview on my TV. What would I need to do to get this set up? I currently live in London EC1.

Dan Pearce: Buy a Freesat or Freesat+ box and connect it to the satellite connections.

I want to 'Flood Wire' my property to recieve either Sky or Freesat satellite reception + terrestrial digital reception.
How many co-axial cables from each outlet plate in each room will i have to install to a common marshalling/connection point in the loft space where the satellite & terrestrial aerial cables will interconnect.

Alex: You can't do that. If you want to have many satellite points, each must connect to an output on the LNB on the satellite dish.

You can get oct-LNBs that provide eight satellite connections.

Satellite and terrestrial cables must NEVER interconnect.

I have recently move to my house. It already has sky dish but no arial.
An arial installer told me that I can connect a freeview box to the dish and have freeview channels.
Is he right?

Gisoo: It was possibly a slip of the tongue, as its FreeSAT that you can do that with not Freeview, so its a Freesat box you require.

Yes, I might have not remembered the word properly.
Would it be better to install an arial or connect the existing dish (and cables) to the FreeSAT box? Isn't FreeSAT box for Freeview chanels?

Gisoo: Well I wasn't actually meaning you but the person who informed you, however either way unless you have a specific reason for wanting Freeview I would be inclined to advantage of the Satellite dish already installed and go for Freesat, as they each have their own advantages with some programmes being on one service and not the other and vice-versa.

Plus as you haven't indicated where you are located (pref: post code) your reception possibilities are not known, although even if they are good you may be in a PSB only area, but should you have knowledge of Freeview services in your area good and well, however if not then a post code will enable what's possible to be checked on.

If you click on the link that will show the comparisons between the two services.
