What connections are used from set top box to TV (such as SCART) ?
You can use the following ways to connect a set-top box to a TV:
1. SCART on STB to SCART on TV. This provides the best possible connection, with stereo sound and "RGB" highest quality connection;
2. SCART on STB to composite on TV. Older TVs without SCART connections usually have "composite" inputs, usually three "phono" sockets (often red, white and yellow). This offers stereo sound and good picture quality. You will need a special cable from a high-street retailer.
3. UHF ("aerial lead") box to TV. This requires that the STB you choose (all Sky, MOST Freeview) has a UHF output. You will need to "tune" the TV into the box, and you will get OK pictures and only mono sound.
If you are stuck with mono or poor quality sound on the TV, you can still use the SCART output (and the same cable as 2) to a separate amplifier to listen in stereo.

Hiya, I need some kind person to help please!
Rather like 'Shaz' posted in January, I have tried connecting up my 1 scart-socket tv set with my 2 scart-socket dvd recorder (they worked great together before) and my newly added 1 scart-socket freeview box, but to no avail. I believe the dvd feels a little jealous!
I did get a basic cheapy scart splitter and tried that, again no luck apart from a badly merging picture - dvd picture and digi tv fighting for dominanace with neither winning. I was watching Titanic which, to be fair, is a bit of a chick flick and slightly wussy, but I think maybe the problem really lies with the hardware.
Someone mentioned to Shaz that they needed to get a sort of splitter that looks the same as a cheap one but has a selector button on it that enables switching between the common single lead and each of the two sockets, as that allows each device plugged into it to be independently selected.
And that is where I need the help. A what now??
I'm trying hard to sneak into the 21st century (no chance I'm ever getting rid of my reliable old Nokia though!) but I have no idea what it is I'm meant to buy. My daughter got me the splitter from Poundland, and I guess you get what you pay for.
Could some kind soul out there please put me out of my misery - or just tell me what to buy and where to buy it from?
Thank you kindly :-)

Thank you so very kindly :-)

Sarah:
Here is an example of what you need
Bush 4 Way Switchable SCART Block. 534/9687
If you key the numeric digits into the Argos search box on their web site, you will see a description of this.
Hope this helps,
Adam.

I recently purchased a new Samsung tv and set up connection from my old sky box using a scart lead to the tv, no hdmi socket. The sound level is almost too low to hear even on maximum volume. The volume is normal when i play dvds through my dvd player connected by a hdmi lead to the tv and when i play my computer through the tv. Any advice please

Gary - Check the Scart plug, as if it is not connected correctly one or more of the pins that carry audio may not be making a proper connection.

Hi, I am trying to connect up my Virgin+ box to my DVD recorder with a scart lead but when I try and play back something I have recorded all I get back is a screen without a picture. Could you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Mike: The first thing that would spring to mind is whether or not you have forgotten to select the correct scart input socket on the recorder that connected to the Virgin box, this done via the recorders "input selector" menu where it indicates the various input socket options, as on a recorder if the input is not pre-selected the default input is the recorders own tuner
If though you have have done this correctly then try a test by recording something from a BBC channel.
If after having checked the points mentioned you still cannot get it to work then give an update on the model of recorder in question.

Mike: Yes, and although Mazbar can of course be quite correct as far as this is concerned it all depends on the version of Virgin+ box thats being used, as some give simultaneous outputs on HDMI and scart whereas others wont, plus of course the connections you are presently using between the TV and the V+ box has to be known insomuch are you using an HDMI connection or just a normal scart connection?
Maybe you could clarify on this point regarding the connections you are using as well as mentioned the model number of the TV that the Virgin+ box is connected to.
