Hi can somone advise please. If someone switches the bathroom light on up stairs or uses the electric toaster in the kitchen when I am watching or recording a live broadcast, the picture freezes for a second or 2 and the sound is also affected. I thought that the aerial might be too close to the mains wiring in the wall somewhere. I was wondering if there was a special filter to buy to stop this happening. Any Ideas?

Hi, Brian
Maby U can help me :) I lives in Council Block fitted with Communal Satellite dish & main Switch Room ( Vision ). Problem is then I would like to enjoy my national Sat provider - Polsat - and to get it I need to mount separate satellite dish to rich signal from Hotbird 13 degree. I got permission from landlord to do that ) Satellite System installed om the roof is set for Astra 2D with quatro LNB ( 4 cables - black, green , yellow and red ) with single dish to provide Sky Tv for 16 flats. There is no free cables on the roof ( just on big one 5 wires ) So my idea is like that : I will mount small zone 2 satellite dish next to communal one and using 2 way splitter will connect my dish with black cable from communal one >
There is 2 satellite connectors ( sat1 + sat2 in my socket + DAB + TV )
So may I please You for advise to correct me ?
Thanks for Your time and all the best for You

Yaro: The four coloured cables referred to "all" play an essential role in the blocks communal dish distribution system and as such must NOT be interfered with in any way whatsoever, if they are then it will affect everyone in the block that views TV via either Freesat or Sky dependant on the programme channel they may be viewing (or trying to!) at the particular time.

Further to that said by jb38, you must not disturb the cables feeding the communal system. Plus you cannot put a 'conventional splitter' in the feeds from a satellite dish - they are not used in the same way as those for a standard terrestrial aerial.
So you will need to provide your own cables from your PolSat dish to your PolSat receiver and you may need further permission from the Council to fit those.
Note also that a receiver connected to the Sky/FreeSat cables (the two connectors Sat1 and Sat2 you mention) will only receive Sky or FreeSat. And you cannot connect those as well as the PolSat cables to the same receiver!

Paul Sounds like interference - radio or possibly power supply.
what sort of bulb do you have in your bathroom? Try a new conventional one.
Try a different toaster nd your toaster in a different plug.

Paul : In addition to that said by Steve P, interference of the type mentioned can sometimes be difficult to cure and especially so if the signal being received tends to be on the low side thereby making it much more vulnerable to be interfered with from such as impulse spikes etc being radiated from the mains cabling, and so if as I suspect your coax runs close to mains cabling at any point along the way then this could well be a contributory factor to your problem.
You can of course purchase mains filters that place in-line with the receiving equipment being used, but in my experience those types are very seldom ever that effective compared to a contact suppressor being fitted across the on/off switch of an offending device, and although this is easy to fit on a bathroom light switch its not quite so simple where a toaster is concerned, that is unless you are fully experienced at working with electrical equipment.
However, purely for information purposes I paste on two links, one of showing the devices referred to, and the other illustrating where to suppressors are fitted.

Paul Gilbert : The new HD multiplex is on lower power than the rest. A wideband aerial may be required:
Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice
Evidently reception of the new channel on the main TV is "marginal" and the other is below what is required.

Paul Gilbert : Good grief! Look at the radiation pattern on the page for Winter Hill (under the map). The purple line shows that of COM8 (the second "new" HD multiplex); I assume that COM7 is underneath it. There is a notch in the direction of Southport. The bearing to Winter Hill from your location is 102 degrees (according to Digital UK). The notch starts (going anti-clockwise) at 280 degrees and you are at 278 degrees (or thereabouts). So those immediately south of you are probably going to be disappointed.
You "might" find that a booster will help.
If reception of COM7 (the one which is on the air now and which carries BBC News HD etc) isn't possible from Winter Hill then you "might" be able to receive it from Moel-y-Parc when it comes on air, although to get BBC North West/ITV Granada you will still need to use Winter Hill so some faffing with combining feeds from more than one aerial will be required. You would also probably be looking at installing a distribution system (to feed more than one room) so you don't have to have two aerials (and combiners) for each room.
