All five public service channels now free to air!

It nice to see that all five of the designated public service broadcasting channels can now be viewed throughout the UK on Freeview, Freesat and Sky.

Here is how the HD line up looks on Freesat now.

If you can’t see the above list you need to power off and on again (on Freesat HD and Sky HD) or do a retune (Freeview HD)

Until recently you needed a Sky subscription package to be able to watch Channel 5 in high definition, the channels strangely  missing out on being free-to-air back in December 2011 [1] having being granted a license by Ofcom the month before [2]

The current list of free to air HD channels is list here - https://ukfree.tv/channels/all

You might need to check your Series Links on Freesat – due to the removal of Channel 5 standard defiition from the  channel guide, my personal  Freesat Freetime box needed my Channel 5 schedule recodings doing again.

Thanks for the UPDATE e-mail regarding CH5 HD. Tuned it in and great reception. Cheers.

After retuning my Freesat HD box, I now have Channel 5 HD (On EPG 105)
but no Channel 5 SD.
I can tune it in manually, but no program list as it no longer has an Electronic Programs Guide.
Although I have a good satellite signal, viewers with a doggy signal or snow on the LNB may find it useful to have both.
I would imagine that they may get a better picture with standard definition as the data is smaller.

Due to very poor reception of Neighbours on C5 SD from Tacolneston this afternoon, I searched online to find out whether C5 was available in HD on Freeview: it had not been previously. I didn't realise it had been available since last Wednesday. Did a retune on my set top box and there it was on 105. Unfortunately, I had lost ITV Anglia SD and didn't want to watch ITV Meridian News in HD, so I re-tuned again and got ITVAnglia SD back again, albeit with very bad CCI due to the fine weather atmospheric conditions. Now I see that Briantist has put a headline banner on this website stating that all 5 main free-to-air channels are available in HD on the Freeview DTT platform.

Mark A: According to info seen, Channel 5 is only listed as Channel 5 HD on TV's or boxes capable of receiving HD transmissions, otherwise its still displayed as normal C5 on SD boxes.

jb38: What Mark A means is he can now only get Channel 5 (SD) in non-Freesat mode and it might be useful if both were available in Freesat mode.

Certainly, if recording, the SD version uses far less disk space. The constant bit-rate HD version takes 4GB/hour.

Hi All,

I am in South Devon (Chudleigh TQ13)
Freeview 1 & 2 (BBC 1 & 2) just seem to disappear ( eg YouView "box" just say Weak/no signa; )
This occurs in more than one dwelling, and has only been happening for under 2 weeks (now=10/May/16)
It also occurs on the FINLAKE Park SERVICE.

How do I find out what is occurring?
{ yes, weather does affect, as usual }

Thanks

Ray

js: Yes, quite so! on having re-read Mark A's posting I now see what he was really getting at. Although as a person who has being viewing HD offerings on Freesat ever since they (or even Freesat itself) first started, I cannot really say that I have ever experienced problems on HD to any great extent more than on SD during snowy conditions.

But though on the subject of Channel 5HD on Freesat, surely the easiest way to view it, or record same in SD, is to use the 5+1 facility on EPG 128.

Ray Glen: Re latter mention of weather. Purely for information purposes, according to the Tropospheric ducting maps (AK: William R Hepburn) the Southern left hand side left hand side of UK is presently experiencing atmospheric conditions conducive to causing problems with reception, this only partially clearing away from your area (only) tomorrow before leaving the UK on Friday.

However the bad news is, that its forecast to return with a vengeance late Sunday / Monday at a much higher level, needless to say, triggering reports of problems with reception from far more areas than your own.
