Joyce Langley: Has your reception returned to normal now? If it has, the problem was caused by weather conditions causing distant transmissions to interfere with your local signals. The weather has now changed, resulting in there now being no prediction for long distance reception in the South of England at the present time.

Vin Rich: No, as these are subscription channels. ITV said right from the start that they wished to offer the HD versions as pay channels. A similar line of thinking applies in Germany, where the SD versions of the commercial channels are free-to-air, but the HD services are pay channels. Only the PSB channels offer HD services free-to-air.

Keir Cranton: Since the problem occurs in a regular evening time slot it would be reasonable to suspect that an activity such as central heating being turned on or security lighting being triggered is responsible for the interference. You could try using a portable radio set to longwave, but off-tune from any station or the low frequency end of MW, say near 558kHz, to see if any interference is detected at the times in question.

Suzanne: That is correct. If both signals are present and the tuner fills the channel list on a first come first served basis, Stockland Hill would usually be put in the LCN (normal) positions in the channel list and Mendip BBC West at 800. If a regional preference is offered during the scan select the Southwest option. You could clear the channel list then do a manual tune for each of the Stockland Hill frequencies in turn, however some receivers would still offer BBC West as a "new channel found" if a signal is present.

r. bedford: Have you checked that the aerial is still in place and is pointing in the usual direction? Also check cables and connectors for damage. Are neighbours experiencing the same problem? If you have a manual tuning facility try selecting, in turn, the frequencies for the Midhurst transmitter, noting the signal strength and quality. If any of them give an acceptable reading select the channel search and store.

NigelJ: "will need a very expensive subscription" - The very reason for retention of the licence fee and Freeview, in order to keep TV affordable for the bulk of the population. I'm not sure why we need a resolution better than HD for watching Corrie or Come dine with me, or catching up on the local news. No doubt Sky will provide a 4k service with a subscription to match, for enthousiasts who are prepared to pay. The production costs alone could well limit the amount of material available, this affecting both TV companies and the movie industry, resulting in sports coverage being the most likely to use such technology.

Brenda Ellis: Re-tune now!. Film4 is now carried on the PSB2 multiplex along with ITV, C4 etc. If your TV retains the original channel list when scanning it will be necessary to delete the existing entry at channel 15 (if possible) before commencing the scan, otherwise perform a factory re-set or first time install to achieve this then scan for channels.

pgw: The Argyll FM transmitters are shown correctly, however the link to the original Campbeltown TV transmitter site, which currently houses transmitters for Freeview TV and BBC national FM services, is missing from the "FM, MW and LW transmitters in Argyll and Bute" page. There is a link to the BBC FM service page from the Campbeltown (Argyll and Bute, Scotland) Freeview Light transmitter page.

david: If you can receive signals directly from Rowridge, that transmitter is planned to carry the new HD muxes from Jan 2014, with a somewhat generous power of 25kW for both horizontal and vertical polarisation.
