MJ Ray: Briantist had no use of gas, so why would he have chosen another retailer?

MikeB: Not unless Freesat receivers were given away or sold for say under £20. Remember that we are talking about mainly "Freeview only" homes with no dish currently in place, for whom the offer of a free box with free installation from Sky looks most attractive.

Steve P: You raise a very good point, that of reliability. The big main Freeview transmitters such as Crystal Palace and Sutton Coldfield are better than 99.9% reliable for the majority of viewers in the intended service area. Satellite reception, at least using a Sky mini dish offers nowhere near this level of reliability and it is fair to say that loss of signal is most likely in Winter when a greater proportion of the population is inside watching tv! Broadband connections and mobile phone signals are even less reliable - at least at the present time. Another question arises regarding satellite reception, that of how many people cannot see the orbital position due to trees, tall buildings or hills blocking the view. Should there be a duplicate service, at least for the PSB channels, from a different orbital position, in the event of Freeview being discontinued? Northern Ireland could easily receive such a back up service if the PSBs were to be added to Saorsat.

David Mansell: Prior to DSO at Winter Hill the Todmorden relay was fed directly from Winter Hill for BBC1/2 and Emley Moor via Cornholme for ITV/C4. In order to co-ordinate the switchover dates the feed for BBC1/2 was switched to Cornholme , which was in turn to be fed from Emley Moor for all four services. As you say, the details for PSB1 need updating.

Brian Baverstock: If you are talking about ITV HD there are only a few ITV regions at present which are equipped to deliver HD content on the local news broadcasts. The whole of the Meridian region is currently fed the South-East option in HD. Meridian South news is transmitted in SD only for the time being.

Briantist: We need all the BBC and ITV regions on the internet first. Plus an internet box that allows a favourite channel list to be compiled and accessed by preset buttons.

Stephen: If your aerial is pointing to Oxford (Beckley) you will have to wait a bit longer for the COM7 transmitter to enter service. There is no precise date given for this, as yet, just due during 2014.

Joe: Germany now has a charge levied against each household which pays for public service broadcasting. It no longer depends on whether a TV is in use, so no need for detector vans, which saves money, and automatically includes any viewing on computers or mobile phones.
