Roger Berry:
a) have you connected the box to the router?
b) how old is the box - the software might be the latest, but that might be old.

Jean Palmer: Go to the manufacturers website /forum, you might get help there.

Freddy: Firstly, put your postcode into the site when you reply, etc - it will create a load of links to check signal, transmitter, etc.

Next, if the Nottingham transmitter is coming up first, you can do one of two things.

1) Manually tune the tv. Go into the setup menu, and you'll find an option for auto or manual tune. Most TV's just look on automatically, but sometimes they mess up (make and model of TV?), and grab the first signal in their scan. But you can manually tune the TV. You will need the frequencies that Waltham is on, hence the need to put your postcode into the site, and then you can see which channel' they are on (not like BBC1, etc), which might be something like Ch 42, etc.

The other is to take out the aerial lead until the TV goes part way through its auto scan, and then put the cable back in, so it misses out Nottingham entirely. Try the first method first, which should be in your TV's manual.

Your aerial is just that, an aerial. And its likely your TV can 'see' Waltham, its just picking up another one first. Its worth looking in the 800's channels - TV will store extra channels there, but best to just nail it on Waltham.

Peter: Start by checking the connections to the back of the tv....

Tony Ferguson: Try changing your aerial lead - if its kaput or has a dodgy connection, then it can wipe out certain muxes. Even if nothing has changed, you'll know its not that, and the are very cheap.

At 17km from Crystal Palace, you should get a cracking signal, so check that your actually tuned to that transmitter, and if you are, then check the rest of your system.

Freddy: look at what the rest of your street have done with their aerials - which way are they pointing?

If you look at the link for Digital UK (thats why we wanted the postcode), you can see that the Waltham transmitter(which does sound like East Midlands) is in the opposite direction from Nottingham, but Sutton Coldfield is very close to Nottingham's direction. And your expected to get a slightly dodgy reception on those two muxes from that transmitter.

Whats the make/moder of your TV? If we know that, we can see if you can find out which transmitter your on.

Pat Bowyer: The transmitter has no reported problems, and certainly 10 days would be a very long time for a fault to go unnoticed.

We dont know your position in relation to the transmitter, so we have no idea what your signal should be like (put your postcode into the site to bring up various links). However:

1) check your tuned to that transmitter - if your tuned to another one far away, then the signal might be too bad to get ITV.

2) check signal strength. Too high is as bad as too low. If its low, then check the wires and connections.

Your neighbours might have a problem, but it might not be the same problem, or the same cause. So you need to check each possibility.

Tony Ferguson: Read again what you've written. You bought a booster 6 weeks ago, because the signal had started to degrade, and then things got bad on the other sets 3-4 weeks ago.

Crystal Palace covers alone something like 20% of the UK population, and there is no evidence of anything being 'downgraded' - especially since you are just 17km from the transmitter (you should have no need for a booster at that distance, and possibly not a powered splitter). A problem that lasted perhaps for 6 weeks would get picked up very quickly.

Loads of people think that somehow its the transmitter, etc. But in the majority of cases, its their own system, and the evidence would suggest the same goes for you.

Since the problem is on all TV's, start by noting the strength of each mux on each TV. That allows you to identify if its one spur thats worse than the others. But since they all have a problem, the fault is almost certainly with the splitter (power supply?) or above it. Start by bypassing the splitter - if the signal improves, then you know its that.

And then go up the chain. A TV aerial is a bit of metal, and attached to a wire just 6mm wide. Even in a loft it can degrade, get loose connections, and outside will get battered by all the weather can throw at it. And stuff goes wrong.

Tony Ferguson: I admire your optimism, but have you any actual evidence that anything was being prepared for a retune?

I'm glad its working again, but I suspect you will be inspecting wiring at some point...

Trevor Harris: Simple - if your the gatekeeper, you control who gets through the gate.

If you are Sky, then you can chose who comes first in the EPG. If your Now TV, your 'most popular/recommended' will reflect either what is the most popular/good, or what Now TV want you to see.

My Now TV box has on demand stuff from the BBC, ITV and C4 as well as Now TV. But of course Now TV could simply feature there own stuff, and therefore make it much more difficult for anyone to find out what else were available.

There is so much content out there that we tend to look at whats on the shelf in front of us. So if you hide everyone else's stuff at the back of the shop, then even though its there, and you can claim your offering it, in reality many people wont find it, and will chose your stuff instead. That might work commercially for them, but its potentially very bad for media diversity and the consumer.

If you want to see this on the internet, look at Net Neutrality, which the Trump Administration is in the process of destroying - 'choice' and 'access' can be illusionary if the people supplying your media and access make sure you can only see their content, or make it much more difficult to see someone else's.
