The symbol shows the location of the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) transmitter which serves 4,490,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) mast?

Stuart:

Start by getting the aerial correctly aligned - that could solve the problem immediately.

If it doesn't them all you can do is to replace the amplifier first and see if that changes things, If that doesn't then you will need to change the distrbution unit and hope that solves it. Note that such distribution units also contain an amplfier and it's not usually a good idea to have two amplifiers in series - unless the reception conditions are so marginal that strengths are extremely weak. But that introduces the possibility if unwanted noise reducing the signal quality to the extent that it becomes unviewable!

Hi Mike,
No problem normally, with receiving signal from xtal Palace tx. But today the reception is particularly poor, with most channels blank. No engineering work is scheduled today. Any ideas please? Maybe, just wait a couple of days to see if rx improves?

Graham Drinkell: i've just said what I'm going to say to you - check your cables. If they are Ok, then you need to call a professional, because if its not the transmitter, its your system.

Graham Drinkell:

From The Wrekin pages today

"This is very likely caused by the high atmospheric pressure affecting various parts of the country, causing lift conditions which allow signals from distant transmitters which cannot normally be received to interfere with the signals from the transmitter you normally use. Do not attempt to retune as this will delete all of your channels which are already correctly tuned. As this is an entirely natural phenomenon, all you can do is wait for the atmospheric conditions to return to normal."

I live in KT6 5EW and am having problems recently with all signals from Multiplex COM7 and 8 Crystal Palace with picture pixelating and breaking up. This is happening on both my TV and Youview Box. The current signal strength is fluctuating between 0% and 75% with quality fluctuating between 0% and 65%.

BBC 1 both signal strength and quality 100%.according to the Youview box.

I have no problems receiving London Live which is a lower powered transmitter. I tried a freeview retune on my YV box and now none of the Com7 & 8 channels are even showing. Prior to this I had no problems on any of these channels.

I have a very strong signal on the other muliplex broadcasts and has only been happening for about the last 3-4 weeks, only on these channels.

My aerial is external and fairly recent.

Any ideas ??

Tony Ferguson: Try changing your aerial lead - if its kaput or has a dodgy connection, then it can wipe out certain muxes. Even if nothing has changed, you'll know its not that, and the are very cheap.

At 17km from Crystal Palace, you should get a cracking signal, so check that your actually tuned to that transmitter, and if you are, then check the rest of your system.

MikeB: Thanks for that, I've already done this. It is over 4 devices all of which were picking up the signals strongly with a splitter in the loft connecting to 2 devices downstairs and 2 upstairs so I checked all of these connections.
All were picking up these signals fine until about 3-4 weeks ago. I purchased a booster for the upstairs ones about 6 weeks ago as the signal started degrading slightly and now all have gone. I wondered if the transmitters/muxes were being downgraded as I note that ch 81 is moving today.

Tony Ferguson: Read again what you've written. You bought a booster 6 weeks ago, because the signal had started to degrade, and then things got bad on the other sets 3-4 weeks ago.

Crystal Palace covers alone something like 20% of the UK population, and there is no evidence of anything being 'downgraded' - especially since you are just 17km from the transmitter (you should have no need for a booster at that distance, and possibly not a powered splitter). A problem that lasted perhaps for 6 weeks would get picked up very quickly.

Loads of people think that somehow its the transmitter, etc. But in the majority of cases, its their own system, and the evidence would suggest the same goes for you.

Since the problem is on all TV's, start by noting the strength of each mux on each TV. That allows you to identify if its one spur thats worse than the others. But since they all have a problem, the fault is almost certainly with the splitter (power supply?) or above it. Start by bypassing the splitter - if the signal improves, then you know its that.

And then go up the chain. A TV aerial is a bit of metal, and attached to a wire just 6mm wide. Even in a loft it can degrade, get loose connections, and outside will get battered by all the weather can throw at it. And stuff goes wrong.

MikeB: Hi Mike well this morning everything back to normal with all signals returned so my guess is that the muxes were being prepared for the Channel 81 retune. Thanks for the help I was dreading having to go in to the loft and check everything.

Tony Ferguson: I admire your optimism, but have you any actual evidence that anything was being prepared for a retune?

I'm glad its working again, but I suspect you will be inspecting wiring at some point...
