Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat

Derek Butlin: There isn't really any great problem involved with what you intend to do, as the TV's in question simply receive the modulators output signal irrespective of what it (the modulator) might be connected to.

Both your TV's will have to be left on the channel that matches the modulators output, this found by simply carrying out a re-scan on each of the TV's whilst connected to the modulator, then storing the channel found.

As far as the remote is concerned, you don't require one, as you will just continue as before with the TV that doesn't have a remote, that is manually switching it off and on and adjusting the volume, the remote on the other TV simply being used to control the volume plus switching off and on.

You could connect the RF modulator into one of your Freesat boxes and run a lead from the modulator to the two TV's, although these would have to view the same channel as the Freesat box is on, as the channels cannot be changed on the TV's connected to the modulator as they have to watch the same programme as on the Freesat box.

The best way to look at it is, that all a modulator does is to provide an analogue TV with another analogue channel in exactly the same way as though its being picked up via an aerial.

ITV 3

Bobbie Cox: When you said that you haven't been able to view ITV3 for the past month the person who enquired (Dave Linsay) if there was anything up in the 800 ranges only done so because any duplicate channels picked up from another transmitter are stored up there.

This creates a situation where its possible that a channel (e.g: ITV3) might disappear from EPG10 but still be found up in the 800 range, and if it is, then the Mux Channel its being received on can be found out via the signal strength menu then it manually tuned in after a fresh scan has taken place without the aerial being connected, this done to blank out anything stored.

It should be appreciated that you are indicated as having good signals from Mendip and Ridge Hill, ITV3 on the former being on Mux Ch48 whereas from Ridge Hill its Mux Ch21.

David: If you have stopped using a Sky+ box and want to use the dish for a Freesat PVR then nothing requires to be altered, as the dish is totally compatible with both pieces of equipment.

The important part being that you are only using Satellite equipment, and which is completely incompatible with anything connected to terrestrial Freeview.

patrick: Without going into a lengthy explanation the answer is no! The reason being that the provision of any further multiplexes would be for purely commercial interests, and with these interests not being willing to pay for the running costs involved, basically because of the limited number of households that these transmitters would serve would not be capable of providing sufficient returns for the money spent.

Peter Bradbury: According to the trade view predictor you are not forecast as being able to receive Midhurst before March 2012, and even then only on a variable / poor status for the foreseeable future past 2014, so anything you try has to be an improvement.

Heathfield (10mls @ 115 degrees)indicates good reception being possible on all channels except for HD which isn't in operation until June 13th next year, the frequencies used by this station requiring a wideband aerial and which you may not have if the present aerial was chosen to cater for Midhurst's channels.

Ann: Its very difficult to assist when your exact location (post code) isn't known, but the problems you mention can be caused by an over powerful signal which can cause blocking on your receiving equipments tuner, the symptoms of this being "exactly" the same as from a weak signal.

A good test to see if this is applying is to try a test on BBC1 / ITV1 etc using a set top aerial, although a more accurate test is by the insertion of a simple attenuator in line with the aerial socket, these costing in the region of £4 or so.

That said, if you come back with your post code then a more precise answer can be given

ben: Basically no! as if you are referring to "free to view" cards these only allow you to view various programmes like 5* / 5US etc or ITV programmes in some areas that although free are encrypted for legal reasons, but not for purposes such as you require which I believe are £10.00 per month on a subscription basis.

Robert: You have to remember that the cause of varying reception qualities is not necessarily always because of anything being done at the transmitter, but more the case of normal changes in atmospheric conditions causing the signal to drop to a level approaching the threshold for reception in the receiving equipment being used, hence picture break up etc.

Of course it does have to be admitted that the other factor that does play a large part in the problem is that these normally occurring changes referred to always show up much more in cases where the signal being received is from a lower powered transmission source, i.e: the weaker the signal strength the more vulnerable it is to be affected by all sorts of problems even although the transmission power is still the same, this being why ad-hoc captions are not really appropriate as the intermittency of the problem is caused by nature and not man, the latter in most cases being unaware its occurring.

Adrian Robertshaw: At being only 2 miles away from Emley Moor you want to use the simplest easy to mount aerial possible, the DM18 seen on the link being perfectly suited for your requirements.
