richie: 5* & 5USA are on the SDN mux which is presently operating on low power until May 9th and so a booster is likely to assist the reception of this particular channel, but you should be able to have good reception of the BBC channels as they are already operating on high power, this making me suspect that something might be amiss with your aerial set up.

Does your loft have modern roof insulation? as sometimes that can dampen the signal if it contains any traces of metallic elements, if though this does not apply then I would try moving your aerial a few feet at a time across to the other side of the loft, leaving your TV on its signal test screen whilst making any alterations so that you get instant feedback of the result of your actions.

Although mentioning about the booster, I would refrain from purchasing same at present and concentrate on the positioning of your aerial.

David Joynson: If Crystal Palace its from 20Kw (10Kw HD) to 200Kw on all muxes, and in the case of Hemel Hempstead its from a mixture of 400 / 200 watts up to 2Kw on all muxes, although you can already get an idea of what reception will be like, as the BBC on both stations have already switched to high power.

Yvonne Boyd: If your Grundig box is connected to the TV via a scart lead then the TV's tuning menu is not connected in any way to the operation of the Grundig, as if the TV's input is set to the socket that the scart is connected into then the Grundig's menu should be seen, if it isn't then there is something amiss with the Grundig or the connections to, double check the lead from the dish.

Likewise if your normal aerial is plugged straight into your TV and DVB or "D" is selected on your TV's remote control you should then be able to scan for Freeview channels, "if" that is your TV is also capable of Freeview reception and not just an analogue device. (model number required if in doubt)

Yvonne Boyd: If you have connected the Grundig boxes "TV scart" socket (furthest away from the LNB connection) and the TV is set to scart input then if you press the "menu" button on the Grundig's remote control (under the "0" button) the menu should appear whether or not a signal is received, if you don't see the menu appear then that's inclined to indicate that the no signal warning is the actual TV not receiving anything because its still sitting on its internal tuner and not the scart socket.

However if you definitely are on the box then check that the dish is connected to the Grundig's "outer" LNB input socket, as you will get a no signal warning if its accidentally been connected to the inner one.

Yvonne Boyd: Meant also to add, that I see your TV is a Freeview HD ready TV with one scart socket and two HDMI ports, but judging by what you have said it would appear that you only have a dish connection and dont have a normal roof (or loft) mounted aerial hence why you cannot receive Freeview, that is "if" you reside in an area where it can be received!

Yvonne Boyd: Pleased to hear that all is OK now, as it just had to be something simple.

Mr. J. C. Richardson: I would say that your problem is most likely being caused by a combination of the engineering work (warning of weak BBC2 analogue at present) that is presently taking place in connection with the high power switchover in September 26th and the general seasonal atmospheric changes that's presently occurring that is causing odd reception problems to people in various areas.

Unfortunately, and as you will no doubt already know, there really isn't much that you can do to help this type unless you are prepared to experiment with your aerial to see if there any alternative positions a few feet away either side that gives a better signal strength, as in your type of situation there usually always is.

ANNE: The problems you are complaining of (as well as others) are not exactly unknown about where that box is concerned, and it might have been better if you had paid the slight extra and purchased the Hitachi 320gb version.

You should really have provided your post code (or at least one from a nearby shop etc) so that the signal strength expected at your location could be checked on as you could be receiving Freeview from either Fenham or Pontop Pike, but I suggest that you give your box another auto-tune WITHOUT the aerial being connected to blank off anything already stored, then follow this with another auto-tune AFTER having reconnected the aerial again.

If still no joy I would pay Argos a visit again, as its my belief that their customer services knows about this complaint.

David Joynson: Although not aware of the actual station you are receiving from as it could be either Crystal Palace (@ 24mls) or Hemel Hempstead (@ 4mls) with both of indicating good reception of the BBC, but you should be aware that if a signal being received is on the verges of being excessively powerful then this can result in the receivers tuner being slightly overloaded and something which can cause various odd problems to occur, so its really the case of carrying out a signal strength check whilst on BBC1 noting the strength seen, as should indications be near to the 100% mark as far as strength is concerned this should be suspected as a possible reason for your problem, so needless to say "if" you have any form of booster fitted then try by-passing it.

Should though you not have a booster in line, then purely for a test if you have access to a set top aerial plug that in and see how things are.

By the way, if you are not sure what transmitter you are receiving from then have a look up at the aerial, if its mounted with the elements pointing up and down then its Hemel Hempstead, but if horizontally mounted then its Crystal Palace.

Regarding the recorder, what brand / model is it? the reason for asking being that there is a range that's inclined to be prone to what you have complained of.

Larry: All Sky boxes no matter of what type can receive "free to view" programmes without a card inserted.

You should carry out a signal check by pressing "services" then 4-6, but if nothing is seen indicated on the strength / quality bar then its either the box itself has failed (usually the power unit) or that the dish has moved a fraction, other possibles being that the "F" connector plug might be internally waterlogged, or the LNB has developed a fault.

The only way you can verify one way or the other where the fault might be is by either trying another box on your dish, or alternatively your box on another dish.
