dave clements: If your TV has an HDMI input then you should couple this to the Virgin boxes similar output using an HDMI lead, the DVD recorder using the single scart input on your TV.

If this for any reason cannot be done and the Virgin box has two scart sockets, which my info suggests it has, then you would simply couple your DVD/video recorder into the Virgin boxes AV2 scart input (maybe called VCR) socket, as the DVD recorder should over-ride the Virgin boxes output when "play" is pressed, if it didn't then just put the Virgin box into "standby".

By the way, if you haven't got an HDMI lead don't be tempted to pay much over £6.00 or so for one, as there is a lot of fanciful nonsense seen claimed for types advertised with somewhat higher priced tags, HDMI leads as frequently sold by places like Aldi or Lidl etc being perfectly OK.

Matthew S Bluck: Meant also to add, that if its found that the signal is too strong then purchasing an attenuator to place in line with the aerial socket of your receiving device will cure the problem.

Needless to say, if any booster is fitted to the aerial it should be removed.

mikeact: I think your dealer might be referring to the HD side of your new TV as Rowridge doesn't start transmitting HD until March 21st next year, likewise only then can the TV be tuned to receive it as you cannot pre-tune a digital TV when no signal exists for it to lock onto.

Present reception indications from Rowridge gives BBC1 (Ch34) and MuxB (Ch28) as variable, ITV and the remainder OK although not exactly sparkling, but it should be appreciated that no two TV's have the same reception qualities due to variations in their tuner sensitivities, this always showing up in areas of somewhat lesser signal strengths, such as your own.

adrian widgery: As far as Freeview is concerned, only if you subscribe to Sky sports 1 or 2 and have a Top up TV Freeview+ set top box.

You cannot access Sky sports etc using a Freesat box.

Lynne: Try carrying out a complete factory re-set then re-tune on the offending set, as this type of problem is usually caused by trying to store more channels than the TV's memory is capable of, hence why they disappear when the set is switched off.

Betty: Speaking as an engineer, I can tell you that there is virtually nothing you can do about this, as its basically caused by the massive power differential between the two multiplexes concerned, as the tuners fitted in the majority of sets cannot cope with this type of thing, a slightly similar problem to this also existing in the Oxford area.

In your particular case of being only 1 mile away from the transmitter you should first of all try removing the aerial then carrying out a factory re-set (only) the TV, then using either a set top aerial, or better still a short piece of wire pushed into the inner part of the aerial socket, carry out a manual tune on Mux Ch63, storing anything received (if at all!!) then you can use the add channel facilities to recover the remaining multiplexes.

This is not guaranteed to work though, as its dependant on how good your receiving equipments tuner is.

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter

MR C BOX: Reception strengths can vary in the evenings, and the TV that loses its picture could simply be because the level of signal it receives during daytime is just high enough and no more to resolve a picture in the first place, but at night time its dropping under the level.

You should carry out a signal strength check on it during daytime and compare this with what's happening in the evening, but it should also be appreciated that no two devices have the same sensitivity, this showing up by one device working where another wont even although they have the same signal, so this fact has to be kept in mind.

The other thing to check is that the offending set is actually receiving from the same transmitter as the other sets, i.e: Mendip BBC-Mux Ch61, as indications are that you can also receive Wenvoe (BBC-Mux Ch41) or even Bristol Kings Weston (BBC-Mux Ch43) albeit the latter being on a semi-variable status.

Its also assumed that the sets are being fed from a distribution amplifier / splitter so that they all receive the same level of signal.

Daniel: What model of VHS recorder are you referring to? If by any chance its something like a Panasonic DVD/VHS combi with an analogue & Freeview tuner are you sure you have selected the Freeview tuner as the recording source? as its sounds as though its trying to record from its analogue tuner, and which will most likely not be receiving any signal.

This being said taking it that when you say ITV4 is fine when watching it, that you are actually viewing it via the recorders tuner.

Peter East: As you haven't given your location (pref post code) its really quite impossible to give an answer with any element of accuracy, although the problem channels you mention would suggest it being the East of England as numerous people are having exactly the same problem as yourself, and is caused by the temporary use of very low power on the multiplexes concerned compared to the power of the main transmitters.

The booster you refer to wont make any difference to picture quality or the number of channels you receive if you are located in the suspected area's, but further info can only be given with knowledge of your location, this making it easier to check on the signal levels expected at your location.

Anne: If you are using a normal aerial into the Sky boxes "aerial in" socket to feed Freeview signals through to other TV's in the house then try removing it and see what happens, because if this clears the problem then its almost certain that the signals coming down from the aerial are clashing with the Sky boxes RF output.

It should also be appreciated, that as there are so many high powered digital stations transmitting its sometimes quite a lengthy exercise to find a channel that doesn't clash, advice could have been given with knowledge of your post code.
