Mary Ann: That's excellent news!! although as all avenues had been explored and with everything tried having drawn a blank, I was going to suggest in my very next reply "exactly" as you have taken the initiative to do, as I felt that the chances of your problem being rectified without the aid of an "on site" investigation were quite slim.

With regards to the procedure used by the local TV engineer, judging by the fact that the tests he carried out resulted in an outcome similar to that of your own, that being negative!, then its rather obvious that you were indeed managing to follow the instructions previously given by myself, albeit that by being unaware of your TV's exact model number the instructions given were collated from three separate Sony models, and although I did see "reset" mentioned in all three of them the term reset only referred to "eco / PC settings / picture / and sound, and with none of relating to the meaning of reset when applied to other brands.

To finalise, when taking the problem you have experienced into account it would be prudent to keep a note of the actions taken by the engineer just in case this problem should return after any future retunes that may prove to be necessary, as what you experienced should NOT have happened.

Rowridge (Isle Of Wight, England) transmitter
Thursday 8 August 2013 12:40AM

James Lewis: Although that said by MikeB is roughly in line with my own views on the subject, I feel that your problems could simply be caused by the signal being fed to the TV's running at a level that's a tad under what would be considered as ideal (i.e: with a good safety margin) hence any slight drop in the level is liable to result in picture glitching problems, you having reported that the problem tends to occur in the evenings somewhat backing this up, of course with variations in the sensitivity between tuners exacerbating the problem.

Another aspect concerns your aerials polarity, as although the signal predictor does not really indicate that much of a difference in reception from the aerial being mounted horizontally to that of vertical, considering the fact that you are using a loft aerial and as such possibly easy to access? then its certainly worth trying it swivelled around 90 degrees to the opposite polarity of whatever way its presently it mounted, as signal propagation can vary between these two polarities and Rowridge does transmit in dual polarities, COM channels being of a considerably higher power on vertical radiation. (H - 50Kw / V - 200Kw)

With regards to loft Vs outdoor aerials, although some of the newer properties fitted with high tech roof insulation can cause problems with reception, however in most cases very little difference is seen in signal strength if the aerial is facing directly through the tiles, even in cases where the tiles are actually wet, that said it does have to be admitted that loft aerials are never that far away from electrical cabling and which is a potential source in electrical impulse interference being picked up, gutter mounts (on soffit or facia boards) being ideal especially if used in conjunction with a Log periodic type aerial.

Ken: With regards to you possibly having to go through the same process again, the answer is "no", and with this no matter which one of Ridge Hills two ITV transmitters your TV or box might happen to be tuned to as Film4 is being added to all PSB2 (ITV1) mux transmitters.

The only reason that I can think of for you not being able to view it on Ch29 was that Film4's stream had not been added to Ridge Hills West facing PSB2 mux on Ch29 at the time you had carried out the rescan, as the additions were not all carried out at the same time as each other, this fact only being revealed by your TV or box having for some reason or another decided to bypass Ch25 in favour of Ch29 during the rescan, although the usual reason for this happening is through a glitch having occurred in the signal at the time the rescan was being carried out.

Mister jimmy: Nothing has been reported as yet on the engineering notice board with regards to any faults on the Oban transmitter, although if its being caused by a failure in the electrical supply to the transmitter then this would be a reason for it not having being reported.

MickS: If only one aerial is being used then the fact that the YouView box receives perfectly OK when the other devices do not is suggestive of a deficiency in the distribution system being used to feed the Freeview signal around the house.

The next time that the reception fails try bypassing the DVD recorder and feeding the aerial connection directly into the TV, as anything in line with a TV can cause a slight reduction in signal strength, that is if your problem is being caused by this and not the reverse situation of a signal a tad on the high side which can result in identical symptoms.

Maybe you could provide info on any splitters being used including the model number printed on its ID plate, also if the splitter is easily accessible then when the reception fails try bypassing it on one of the TV feeds, although this might require the aid of a back to back coax coupler as the downlead from the aerial will be terminated in a male connector likewise the one removed from the splitters output that feeds one of the rooms.

By the way, Bristol Kings Weston @ 2.5 miles is indicated as being the station that covers your area.

J Holland: Nothing has been reported as yet with regards to any faults being in existence with Heathfields HD transmitter, nor is any engineering work taking place, have you checked with any others to determine if they are also being similarly affected, that is "if" the others are capable of receiving HD.

kate: I can verify that said by KMJ,Derby as I have also just checked it in the Stamford area, however it depends on your location (post code or one from nearby required) as reception from COM6 can be variable in certain areas and if you cannot receive RT then neither should you be able to (19) Yesterday nor (24) ITV4.

Jonathan: The red dot is to access the interactive service, if when you see the red dot you press the red button (to left of green) on your remote control this will open the service with Challenge games and puzzles.

Please note though, that once you have opened the service the easiest way to exit it is by punching in any programme channel number or the screen might remain blank.

anthony tucker: Although this type of query should really be accompanied with a post code or one from nearby e.g: a shop / Post Office, however using Yeovil Post Office as a test code nothing is seen reported as far as any problems are concerned with either the Stockland Hill or Mendip's TV transmitters, although Mendip's DAB radio was off air for a short time today from 13.33 to 13.49.

You should check with a neighbour to find out if they are also experiencing similar problems to yourself, as if they were then you can eliminate your own installation as being responsible for the problem.

Please note though, that should you decide to check elsewhere then have a look up at the direction the other persons aerial is facing just in case its not the same way as yours, Stockland Hill being 246 degrees and Mendip 1 degree, based of course on the location of Yeovil Post office and not wherever you might reside.
