Alan Harris : If you are meaning that an "external" signal strength meter is indicating full strength then the immediate thing that would spring to mind is whether or not you have horizontally aligned the dish on Astra 28.2 and not on one of the other sats positioned on either side of it? as the difference in adjustment between them is quite fractional.

John McCann: Yes, please do! as everything indicates that this action should provide a more stable signal to that obtainable from Heathfield.

Barry : Purely with reference to your question regarding the TX aerial mast, the PSB transmission aerials (panels) are always located at the top of the mast and as such can sometimes be received in a not too distant location at a "slightly" lower strength than that of the other transmitters radiating from lower down the mast, the signal "over the head" effect being totally dependant on the terrain, and of course with the reverse situation sometimes being the case if the receiving aerial is located on high ground.

Izzy : Boxes should not automatically "reset" themselves unless it has developed and internal fault, however if you are meaning that it carried out an "automatic channel update" or alternatively a software same then at 10 miles away from the Crystal Palace transmitter there is no reason why you should not have picked up ITV1 or ITV3 on a subsequent rescan, that is assuming that you did unplug the box from the mains supply for about a minute or so before connecting it up again and carrying out the retune?

The other point being, that you should try a make an enquiry with a neighbour just to verify that they are not also being affected in a similar fashion to yourself, as should a problem have occurred in the communal aerial feed to your part of the block it always affects a number of outlets.

It would also assist if the model number of the box was known.

Geoff Stephenson: Just a small point in addition to the advice given by Jamie.

You say that you have two coax cables coming into your living room and into the Triax distribution amplifier, if one of the cables is connected into the amplifiers input then what input is the second cable connected into, FM / DAB?

The other point being, that "if" (as you might not have) your old Sky box had a coax going into its aerial input socket? then this has to be connected into the coax connector that you removed from the boxes RF2 output socket as it could have been a link into the Freeview aerial system.

J Peter Wilson: Many thanks for your comprehensive update with regards to the equipment used in your household for entertainment, that said rather indicating that TV reception via an aerial is of somewhat less importance compared to the other devices at your disposal used for viewing / listening.

I do of course realise that you were only making a comment about your reception and "not" asking a question, but I was rather intrigued by the fact that you were actually receiving a signal from such a low powered transmitter located at over 50 miles away when residing in an area reputed for notoriously variable / low signal strengths from Belmont's high powered transmitters, although admittedly in any location known for iffy reception choice areas will always exist, you obviously residing in one of them!

I am usually up the Scarborough / Whitby areas three times a year, and likewise purely for the notebook fully intend whilst in the area to carry out a few checks on exactly what can be received from Belmont now that additional transmitters have been added into the system, my vehicle containing all the equipment necessary for such tasks.

Regards / jb.

DaveG: Thanks for the update, the content of being very informative as it indicates that although your box is of a similar age to the one I use the software on yours is approximately 4 years out of date, the software version on mine being HPRSFCI 1.00.21 dated 27th July 2012 whereas yours is 1.00.02 dated10th November 2008, this being the most likely reason why you are experiencing so many odd problems on retuning etc.

No over air downloads for Humax HDR's are forecast for this week, although they "might" not work anyway by the fact of your box being so far out of date, this then leaving your only option being to download the software update from the Humax website onto a flash drive then transfer it into your box, this type of procedure not being without its problems!

Anyway, the first of the two attached links fully explains the procedure used and with the second being Humax's download site, I would though suggest that you have a study at them before attempting anything, because if anything goes wrong whilst carrying out the procedure your box could be permanently disabled.

david s: No engineering work is being carried out at the Craigkelly transmitter and no faults have been reported, therefore in order to eliminate the possibility of the problem being caused by something connected with your own installation such as a faulty coax to aerial connection, you should try and make an enquiry with a neighbour to find out if they are also experiencing similar problems to yourself.

DaveG : On reading over my previous reply, this copied and pasted from another screen, I have just noticed that I accidentally missed the latter section which contained a couple of questions, those being, (1) has your box always been kept powered up (albeit in standby) and connected into the dish?, (2) when you had previously downloaded the software into a USB key for transfer into the box was this done because you were experiencing problems or just because you realised that the software was out of date? because if the latter then any glitch whilst carrying out this process could, as you will most probably realise be responsible for your problems, this unfortunately being something which isn't rectifiable.
