John Morris: Sandy transmits on horizontal polarity, and as far as fitting the aerial in the loft it all depends on where you are located in Peterborough, as reception can vary slightly between the North and South sides of the city with many in the North end favouring Waltham, although speaking in general terms a good signal can be received in most areas with the exception of Sandy's Mux Ch67 & Mux Ch48 which are still on low power, this also applies to Mux Ch31 but it is generally received at a far superior level over the other two mentioned.

For a loft aerial, I would recommend that you take advantage of an excellent offer I noticed that's on in Screwfix, the aerial referred to seen on the link and is virtually guaranteed to be perfect for your requirements provided its not positioned facing into a water tank. (this aerial in Argos being £52.00)

By the way on the co-ax issue, there is no real need to change this at all provided water hasn't crept into it nor has it been damaged in any way.

This being the aerial referred to.

Jasper Gee: If not already having done so at changeover, I would carry out a fresh factory re-tune to ensure that everything already stored is completely blanked out of the channel memory, as your type of problem is usually associated with only having carried out an ordinary auto-tune.

You should also ensure that you are actually receiving from Emley Moor, as Belmont is also shown as being possible on your code, this easily checked by carrying out a signal test on BBC1, if Emley its Mux Ch47 whereas Belmont is Mux Ch22.

Humax FOXSAT-HD freesat HD | Freesat

P.Leslie: The answer is that it might do, as although these have pre-installed codes to suit a number of boxes its not by any means guaranteed that these include the Humax Foxsat referred to.

Its really best if you go into the shop and ask the assistant to check the list of device codes that's shown in the leaflet which is enclosed in the package.

steve: As you are only 22 miles away from Sutton Coldfield you could be receiving a signal that's on the verges of being too powerful, so try a test by temporarily removing your booster, the symptoms of an over powerful signal being exactly the same as a weak one.

That said taking it that you are receiving Sutton coldfield and not Waltham @ 23 miles away.

To test which carry out a signal check on BBC1, if Sutton its Mux Ch43 / Waltham Mux Ch61.

mr wainman: You would really have to indicate your location (pref: post code) to enable your reception possibilities to be checked on, as when you refer to better quality its assumed that you are meaning reasonably glitch free, as the quality of digital TV does not change with varying signal strengths so long as they stay above the cut off threshold.

Suzanne: Just having a read at the outcome of your problem, I am really pleased to see that you report all as being OK now.

I would also like to say that your honesty on finding the cause of the problem is also very much appreciated, insomuch that some might have decided that after having had such lengthy communications with various assisting with the problem it was maybe best policy to keep quite about it, basically for face saving purposes, and likewise ceased giving any further updates, something which would have left us all wondering what happened.

Anyway thanks again / Regards - jb

Connecting it all up | Installing

Angie: You haven't mentioned Freesat what, TV or Box? however the problem would suggest that the scart lead you are using is either faulty or not fully seated into the socket properly, check either end.

If though its a box, try reversing the scart plug socket positions used on the box.

Jason Mallon: Although I find it a bit strange that you cannot get any reception from even the roof aerial, this making me suspect that some other factor may be involved concerning your TV, and which knowing the model of would be of assistance, however as far as reception is concerned you would really have to provide the post code of the area you are referring to, as certain areas in Edinburgh use Blackhill for reception whereas others use Craigkelly, or even in some cases the local Cannongate transmitter, as signals from the main stations are impossible to receive in these area's screened by high density buildings.

Ed: I realise that you are using The Wrekin for reception, but have you ever tried the massively more powerful Sutton Coldfield? especially since high power operation started.

Although its only at 17 miles away I appreciate that @ 33 degrees it "might" possibly suffer from the same problem as Brierley Hill @ 51 degrees, but because of Sutton Coldfield's power it could still possibly be a slightly better bet for reception.

I would be inclined to try a test using the Sony box, by first of all blanking out anything stored by scanning without the aerial being connected, then after re-connecting carry out a manual tune on Mux Ch45 (equiv of Wrekins Mux Ch44), then if anything is received carry out another manual tune on Mux Ch39 (= to Wrekins Mux Ch47)

Your aerial will obviously be out as The Wrekin is at 313 degrees compared to Suttons 51, but it would give a rough idea of whether or not its possible to pick it up, as the trade reception predictor does indicate Sutton Coldfield as being receivable at your location.

steve: If you are referring to your query made at 8.06PM yesterday, I notice you mention two TV's being used on your system so is the situation the same on both after re-tuning?

The other point is did you try by-passing the booster? or should the booster be a two way splitter type then just take its aerial input lead out and connect it directly onto one of the leads going to a TV then try a further re-tune, making sure that its on the TV that the aerial was linked into.

(The re-tune is essential as you might not have anything stored in the channel memory)

As far as the aerial is concerned, its not so much that a new one might be required, but more the case of a check being made on the connections to the existing one.
