All free TV channels in the UK
Saturday 30 May 2020 5:04PM

martin: All4 is free if your TV has the app available. There is an optional subscription which allows you to watch in HD with no adverts, but the basic catchup service is free.

Geoff: Freeview is digital terrestrial TV received via an aerial, it is not an internet streaming service. If you connect an aerial to your smart TV and look for automatic tuning in the settings, it should be able to tune in all available channels.

David Warner: COM7 & COM8 are temporary multiplexes that were created using spare frequencies and equipment to encourage the take up of Freeview HD receivers. There was never any intention of them having any sort of PSB status and the the TV licence does not give a right to receive any particular service.

There has never been an announcement of when any further multiplexes will be converted to DVB-T2, just speculation based on a plan that was proposed several years ago.

COM7 & COM8 have been turned into single frequency networks in order that they can continue to broadcast by occupying the same two frequencies (in the centre gap of the new 700MHz mobile band) at each transmitter and will stay like this until they close, no date has been announced at it will depend on when the mobile networks who win those frequencies in the 700MHz auction are ready to bring them into use. Increasing the transmitter power will cause destructive interference to viewers of more distant transmitters and is not something that will happen. If you are very close to the transmitter but not getting a good signal you are likely to either not have a wideband aerial or your receiver is being deafened by receiving too much signal for it to cope with.

All free TV channels in the UK

martin: A box that supports Freeview Play will have All4, along with various other catchup services. Depending on cost it might also be worth considering something like an Amazon Fire TV stick or Now TV stick which will give you All4 plus loads of other apps.

Lisa: The Freeview coverage checker does not predict any transmitter to be receivable at your postcode. It is extremely unlikely that this will change in future, so you need to look at alternatives such as Freesat for reliable reception. I'm not sure what you mean about a pre-2012 TV as all TV has been digital since then, there are no analogue channels available anywhere in the UK and no one using an older TV can get any services that cannot be received on a current model. Also, this is an independent website where volunteer contributors aim to provide technical help with reception problems, no one here has any way of reviewing or rectifying a gap in coverage.

Challenge +1
Thursday 4 June 2020 1:38PM

Mike: To save money, as fewer viewers are watching +1 channels compared to a few years ago and most programmes are available on catchup. With the current decline in advertising revenue we may well see other +1 channels close over the next few months.

Forces TV
Thursday 4 June 2020 1:42PM

John: Forces TV is on the COM8 multiplex, which is not broadcast from the Nottingham transmitter. If you provide a full postcode we can check whether you might be able to receive it from another transmitter, as Nottingham has a lot of overlapping coverage with the Waltham transmitter, which does broadcast COM8.

Terry Stanford: If you carry out a full scan on most DAB radios, it will search for all available multiplexes from every available transmitter then give you a complete list of available stations, rather than just stopping at the first multiplex found. If your radio has a manual tuning function, scanning VHF Block 10B 211.648 MHz will give you the Somerset local mux if it is available at your location. If you're using an older DAB radio you may need to carry out a "rest of world" scan as Block 10B is outside the frequency range originally used for DAB in the UK.
