Transmitter engineering: For over a week now the relay at carhampton in somerset has been down. I'm a local tv engineer and have spent a lot of time retuning my customers to the welsh transmitters so they can at least watch something. Can you tell me what the problem is and when it might be fixed so I can pass this on to my customers?

Norman D Landing: There are three of my customers in Old Cleeve, two at TA24 6HN and one at TA24 6HL, then there is one at West Quantoxhead TA4 4DH, pretty sure it's not local interference, Carmel is romping in at Old Cleeve, measuring the signal from Carhampton there I'm getting a reasonable strength but no signal quality at all.

Chris.SE: Yes I was surprised about the third postcode myself but it was a very strong signal when I installed the aerial a few years ago. Carhampton has also served the Old Cleeve postcodes very well for many years. I don't think any Welsh transmitter that could have any influence is using the same UHF channels, Carmel has a couple of adjacent channels but they shouldn't have any effect.

I have many customers in the area but only a handful have contacted me, the others may have retuned to Carmel or Wenvoe themselves, I don't know, but I have noticed that my affected customers are all to the east of the relay.

Chris.SE: Hey, that's ok. I just don't think it's interference from any source. Wenvoe, Carmel and Mendip, to name a few, share common frequencies with no problems. I will get to the bottom of it eventually!

Norman D. Landing: No improvement at all. I spent Monday morning driving around the relay with an aerial, fine in all directions except a corridor to the East of the relay that takes in those postcodes. I went on the BBC's coverage checker and for those postcodes it said there were no channels available from the Carhampton relay and the best one to go for was Carmel. My customers don't want Welsh tv!
Regarding interference from Carmel, I don't think that's the case because the Porlock relay uses the same frequencies as Carhampton and is not affected at all by Carmel, even though it's stronger there. It's almost as though Carhampton's footprint has changed!

Norman D. Landing: Yes I've driven round with an aerial and my meter, to the west of the relay I found no problems, even to the east all was well at postcode TA24 6HX yet 200 yards up the road I was getting an identical strength reading but no signal quality, this seemed to be the case right around to Bilbrook at TA24 6HD but then at Withycombe between Bilbrook and Carhampton the signal quality returned.

I was sitting on a bungalow roof looking at the relay, no more than two miles away, nothing in the way, no new buildings or large trees.

Chris.SE: Kilvey Hill is an interesting thought, it's not strong enough to be useable in Carhampton though, I did look for it while I was doing my testing but could barely pick it up on my meter. I did try panning the aerial to the south and yes Carhampton did start to come in, I assumed it was a reflection off the hills but looks like I might have been wrong!

Lee Maidens: Whereabouts are you in Carhampton Lee?

Chris.SE: That's something worth trying, off on holiday for a few weeks so will get cracking when I get back and report back then.

Chris.SE: Thanks, I will report back in September with any solutions. I had considered Freesat for my customers but that involves quite an outlay for most of them, as it is, I've left them on a very good Carmel signal until I can get back to them.
