Transmitter engineering: For over a week now the relay at carhampton in somerset has been down. I'm a local tv engineer and have spent a lot of time retuning my customers to the welsh transmitters so they can at least watch something. Can you tell me what the problem is and when it might be fixed so I can pass this on to my customers?

Steve Hill: which services are affected? The three multiplexes use three seperate transmitters, the only commonality is the transmission antenna and the electricity supply. So for all the services to be down would be a major fault, which im sure Arqiva's control room (manned 24/7 with remote monitoring of every transmitter in the country) would have noticed!

Are you sure there isnt something local causing interference, a new 4G mast or the like? Can you provide postcodes of some of the affected properties?

Norman D Landing: There are three of my customers in Old Cleeve, two at TA24 6HN and one at TA24 6HL, then there is one at West Quantoxhead TA4 4DH, pretty sure it's not local interference, Carmel is romping in at Old Cleeve, measuring the signal from Carhampton there I'm getting a reasonable strength but no signal quality at all.

Norman D Landing: Now there's a name that rolls of the tongue! Not Mellie's cousin? He was well clued up on Arqiva monitoring!

Steve Hill:

Well I'm glad I don't live at any of those postcodes, putting each into Digitaluk's coverage checker at Digital UK - Coverage checker shows that none get ideal reception from the local transmitters and Carhampton is only a "Light" transmitter, not predicted to be receivable at your 3rd postcode.

I'm wondering if the primary cause at this time is the current tropospheric propagation as you have signal but no quality. There's some not too distant Welsh repeaters using the same UHF channels as Carhampton IIRC without looking.

PS. btw any connection with UKCR?

Chris.SE: Yes I was surprised about the third postcode myself but it was a very strong signal when I installed the aerial a few years ago. Carhampton has also served the Old Cleeve postcodes very well for many years. I don't think any Welsh transmitter that could have any influence is using the same UHF channels, Carmel has a couple of adjacent channels but they shouldn't have any effect.

I have many customers in the area but only a handful have contacted me, the others may have retuned to Carmel or Wenvoe themselves, I don't know, but I have noticed that my affected customers are all to the east of the relay.

Steve Hill:

I only mentioned Welsh relays because of the direction aerials will tend to be pointing. They're all low power of course, but with tropospheric propagation, it's amazing where signals can come from, and of course there are several high power transmitters around the country & abroad using these channels. I haven't done any serious dxing in recent years, but many moons ago when we still had B/W 405 lines band 1, even using an indoor aerial I was getting eastern bloc signals (not stable enough for a good picture for more than a moment or two) but the interference remained for some time!

There's some other more local transmitters using some or all of the same channels, here's a few just for example -
Bath, Bristol Montpelier, Portbury, Hutton, Portishead, Porlock, Brushford .......
One of the slightly higher power Welsh ones is Aberdare.
Whilst they're low power, with the sort of conditions we've had lately, interference could be coming from anywhere! Apologies for probably telling granny how to suck eggs!

Chris.SE: Hey, that's ok. I just don't think it's interference from any source. Wenvoe, Carmel and Mendip, to name a few, share common frequencies with no problems. I will get to the bottom of it eventually!

Steve Hill: Now that the weather has changed, can you say if there has been any improvement? Those postcodes (other than the third) are well within the predicted coverage for Carhampton, so the issue is likely to be either CCI or local interference,

Chris, not entirely sure what your nattering about? Mellie? As for understanding Arqivas systems, i occasionally have to work alongside them in my official capacity, and as the systems I am responsible for have the potential to cause drastic problems to Arqiva, I have to understand how they interact. Were both subject to the same laws of physics.

Norman D. Landing: No improvement at all. I spent Monday morning driving around the relay with an aerial, fine in all directions except a corridor to the East of the relay that takes in those postcodes. I went on the BBC's coverage checker and for those postcodes it said there were no channels available from the Carhampton relay and the best one to go for was Carmel. My customers don't want Welsh tv!
Regarding interference from Carmel, I don't think that's the case because the Porlock relay uses the same frequencies as Carhampton and is not affected at all by Carmel, even though it's stronger there. It's almost as though Carhampton's footprint has changed!
