andrew packer: ITV4, Russia Today and Film4 are carried on the Arqiva B multiplex which is on channel 60 from Belmont. Try manually tuning to channel 60.

Check that you have ITV3 (carried on SDN) and Pick TV (which is on Arqiva A).

Are you in part of the town which cannot receive from Emley Moor?

Andrew Packer: I think that the answer is likely to be your aerial; you need a wideband one.

Pick TV (and other Arqiva A channels) and Yesterday, ITV4 (and other Arqiva B channels) are at the top of the band.

Belmont was a Group A transmitter which means that it only used channels in the lower third of the band. Consequently aerials that were installed for it were Group A ones. This means that they are much more sensitive at the bottom third of the band and less sensitive higher up.

ITV3 (carried on SDN multiplex) and BBC and ITV1, C4 etc are all in Group A, hence why I believe that you can pick them up.

Free channel of the day: BBC Two

Graham.F.Lewendon: Hear hear!

Mains cables aren't designed for carrying signals because they're not screened. Connecting these wretched things to your home wiring will turn that wiring into an antenna.

As well as the RF polution, there is the amount of electrical energy being consumed to create it. They should be banned.

Chris: Switchover at Midhurst is on 29th February and 14th March.

On 29th February, BBC Two analogue will be switched off and on the same UHF channel will go the full power BBC standard definition services. Then the rest of the analogue channels are turned off two weeks later.

The latest Ofcom document shows that some services will be on low power for a period and that others will be subject to reactive power decrease if necessary. It is probably worth being aware of this as if you are in a poor signal area, it could affect you:

BBC A (BBC standard definition TV & radio) Ch55 @ 20kW but with "a reactive power decrease to 10kW is an option if required".

D3&4 (ITV1, C4, C5 etc) Ch61 @ 20kW, as BBC (reactive decrease to 10kW).

BBC B (HD services) Ch58 @ 20kW. No reactive power, so will be at full power.

SDN (ITV3 etc) Ch62 @ 10kW. No reactive power, so will be at full power.

Arq A (Pick TV etc) Ch59 @ 10kW. Until 20th June there will be a reactive power to 5kW if required.

Arq B (Yesterday etc) Ch50 @ 10kW. Until 25th April, this will be at 1kW.

KMJ,Derby: I'm not sure about loss of Arq B. It is only 1kW at the moment (on Ch60).

Hannington (Hampshire, England) transmitter

Bob: The text has been preemptively struck out.

You are correct in your understanding; the first stage of switchover is on 8th February with the conclusion on 22nd February.

david: The situation is unlikely to change for you due to the broadcastors being run on a commercial basis. See here for a fuller explanation:

Will there ever be more services on the Freeview Light transmitters? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

Unless you can receive from another transmitter (usually a main transmitter) that carries these services, then you will not get them.

Leigh: In cases such as this, a location might be helpful, preferrably in the form of post code.

In general terms though, I wonder if the problem could be:

Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

I wonder if your "upgraded" aerial was fitted prior to switchover and now that your signal is strong, it is OTT and pulling in too much signal (see above link).

As I say, a post code might help shed some light on the likely issue.
