John Spendlove: ITV 4 has moved to the PSB2 multiplex so can now be watched on the "Freeview Light" transmitters. It is often the case that this is the problem people have with PSB1 (that carries the SD BBC channels): Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you I've removed your phone number!

MikeB: Thanks for your comments, they are very interesting.

You're correct about the cost of BBC One nations and regions - I used a 2004 figure of £550m and added inflation - BBC - Press Office - BBC Nations & Regions - and got Why the BBC should abandon 700+m "regional news" to fund local radio, BBC three....

Also thanks for the radio times article, I've already posted up my "response" Time for the BBC to release the DOGs? !

ITV 4

Mark A: The reason that ITV is on the PSB2 multiplex is that it's the "Licenced Public Service" that provides ITV plc, STV plc and UTV Media access to half the mux.ITV, ITV HD and ITV+1 aren't national services, they have fully local adverts, which they must to comply with the "Contracts Rights Renewal (CRR) remedy" - Airtime sales rules | Ofcom - in addition the PSB2 multiplex carries the STV four regions (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee) in Scotland, as well as UTV in NI. ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and ITVbe are all the same whereever in the UK you watch them, wiith UK-wide adverts.

jb38: Sorry to argue about this, just having a look at the "Blue Book" and it should be possible for recordings to use programme identifiers that allow scheduled recordings to be continuted if a channel moves to a new multiplex."22.2.3.7 Tracking schedule changesWhen the recorder is not in passive standby and a schedule change occurs, the affected programmes in the schedule of recordings and any recordings in progress shall be updated. In standby, a recorder shall monitor the EITp/f sufficiently frequently and for sufficient duration to allow a programme to be recorded successfully even when the start time is brought forward by up to ten minutes and the schedule"This means that when a channel moves multiplex the NIT can show that the identified scheduled recording is to be found in a new place. This is possible because the NIT for ALL Freeview channels is carried on ALL Freeview multiplexes.

RonnieB1970: Hi. ITV4 has moved from the last commercial multiplex ("Arqiva B") to the main ITV/Channel 4 one ("3+4 Ltd"). If it has worked, you see nothing! This is for the benefit of people with "Freeview Light", ITV4 now on Freeview Light transmitters: retune needed for all Freeview homes

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter

Andy: The best place to start with this issue us Single frequency interference . It is much more likely to be an issue at your location, with almost 3 million homes covered by this mast, a problem with everyone would be picked up very quickly.

Time for the BBC to release the DOGs?
Saturday 29 August 2015 4:16PM

MikeB: Great idea for an article. I have covered some of this stuff before, but it certainly could do with some explanations. Being a coder since I was 9 years old, this stuff all seems very obvious to me, but from the outside what can be done in software and what can't (and why) is certainly worth an explanation.
