My Sky box has a "no signal message" - what do I do?

My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Judith Shaw: Should repeated switching between BBC1 & 2 fail to make any difference to the situation, then try disconnecting the box from the mains for about 30 seconds or so before reconnecting it again, as the problem might have been caused by a glitch in the system.

Although prior to carrying out this procedure, if your box is of the Sky+ variety? try swapping the LNB1 & 2 inputs over and see if this changes anything.

By the way, channel changing on a satellite box is achieved by the box sending instructions (voltage and tone) to the LNB mounted on the end of the dish arm, needless to say, these control signals can be shorted out if any water manages to creep into the LNB's "F" connector plug on the end of the coax.

To help us to help you we really need a post code, or that of a nearby shop or Post Office. Then we can determine which transmitter you should be using and whether there is any maintenance work being done. We could also check if there are any particular difficulties associated with your location, such as hills/mountains, tall flats, etc.
It would also help us if we knew what equipment you are using. I presume you have a TV with either built-in Freeview or else a Set Top Box. It also helps if we know what sort of aerial installtion you have, whether it is outside on the roof or inside in the loft and in which general direction it is pointing.
Or are you using Sky or FreeSat through a dish?

If you wish to cancel your Sky subscription, you need to contact them direct. They give a number on their website of 03332 022 135 but that may not be useful from your current location, it being a UK freephone number. The alternative is to contact them via their website Contact us | Sky.com You will need to have your Sky Viewing card to hand as they may well ask for the card number. Be prepared for some awkward questions because of the Tenerife location as that is outside of the intended service area.
Note that once the subscription is cancelled the equipment can no longer be used for the chargeable programmes nor for recording, though it may be useable for Freesat if the signals are available at your location, but I suspect they are not.

MikeP: 0333 numbers, as with all numbers beginning 03, are geographic rate. This means they are included in packages just as geographic (01/02) calls are and cost the same when otherwise called outside the terms of a plan. This applies to landlines and mobiles. It's possible that overseas providers charge more to call UK 03 numbers (+443) than geographic ones (+441 and +442).

Freephone numbers begin 0800 and 0808. There are also a few in the 0500 range and these will be phased out.

could we please have a number to talk to someone about getting our box out we seem to get a "NO SIGNAL" from 9pm on wards nearly every night and it's really frustrating to switch tv and box off for a few minutes till you get a signal i do not pay Sky a monthly bill for me to continuously fix this problem. if its not disappearing the picture becomes distorted and volume disappears and you miss what's being said never been so disappointed .
We had virgin for 5 years and i could count on one hand how much times it went off but we were told by a sale man that we could get a better and cheaper service, boy were we conned.

tracy buckley: When you say "wont work" are you meaning that you get a "no signal" message when you use it in the living room? if you do, then are the outlet points in each of the locations independent of each other, i.e: a cable from each point is connected into the LNB on the dish? or are they linked to each other by a coax cable? Should the former apply (which is the norm) then the LNB port used for that socket is defective, possibly by water having entered the "F" type connector on the LNB.
