My potcode is wn8 and my nearest transmitter is winterhill. I have a humax 9300t freeview tuner in the lounge an reception doesn't appear to be a problem. In the bedroom however I have an old Goodmans GDB2 digital receiver that doesn't pick up all channels (eg 8,11,12,17,25,29,32, 36,37 and many more). I've tried your recomended method of erasing channels and reinstalling and have even reinstalled to 'add channels'. I seem to have all I am going to get. What is the problem? It can't be the signal if my humax box is getting the channels.

nigel: There is a known issue with the Goodmans GDB2 which means that it is unable to receive 8k multiplexes with a negative offset on their channel number:

Refer to this page for services by multiplex:

All those you've referred to are on COM5 which has a negative offset from Winter Hill. PSB1 also has a negative offset, but my guess is that your receiver has tuned in PSB1 from an alternative transmitter that doesn't have a negative offset.

Skelmersdale transmitter is in the same direction as Winter Hill and its PSB1 is on C51, so bring up the signal strength screen on BBC One and see if it is tuned to C51.

The good news is that there will be a retune on 10th April 2013 when PSB1 and COM5 will change channels to ones with negative offsets.

A negative offset means that the frequency of the signal is slightly below the centre of the channel. For example, COM5 is on C61- which is at 793.8MHz whereas C61 is at 794MHz.

nigel: My posting should say that PSB1 and COM5 from Winter Hill will change to channels WITHOUT offsets on 10th April which means that you should then be able to pick them up.

It might be worth checking that your receiver hasn't tuned in PSB2 from Skelmersdale which is on C48. Skelmersdale is vertically polarised and your aerial is horizontal for Winter Hill, so reception could be a bit iffy.

Our post code is PO19 3RN. We have a brand new TV new areial new freeview+ HD box and all new cables etc. We have set this up correctly, tuned in the box and initially got all channels. Then later on the same day when we turned back to dave there was no signal have also lost pick tv. The rest of the channels are perfect. We have retuned but dave is not tuning in.To confuse things even more, when the areial is put back in the TV and the box disconnected, we get dave on the TV.This is the 3rd box we hav tried and all have done the same. We are very confused.Everything is new and we should get all freeview channels, checked on freeview site. can you help?

Steve: Your aerial should be mounted vertically for best reception of the Commercial (COM) channels from Rowridge.

The COM channels don't have as wide a coverage as the Public Service (PSB) channels. In some cases a new aerial will be required to pick up the COM channels; existing aerials (those installed in the days of four-channel analogue) will work for PSBs.

However, Rowridge is unique as, since the change last April all six channels have been broadcasting horizontally and vertically. The PSB channels are 200kW horizontally and vertically; the COM channels are 50kW horizontally and 200kW vertically. Generally speaking, existing aerials on Rowridge will work and will just need switching to vertical polarisation if reception of COMs isn't good.

Dave and Pick TV are carried on COM5. A full list of Freeview services by multiplex (PSB/COM) are here:

Steve: If Dave does not appear on the EPG listings then go into your boxes tuning menu and select "manual" tune and enter Ch22 but do NOT press search or scan because on most equipment the signal strength of that channel will immediately be seen, make a note of whatever it is for reference purposes THEN press search and observe if any channels are found, storing them if they are as this will add them to your EPG list.

If though on the other hand nothing is found, then this simply means that the level seen indicated is under the reception threshold for the box being used and likewise the signal requires boosting.

You can test the level required for reception by carrying out the previously described manual tune test but this time using either Ch27 (ITV1) or Ch25 (ITV3) and noting the levels indicated, then you compare the levels obtained from those two against that from Ch22 which failed to store anything.

Steve: It might be worth checking if there is any interaction with the HDMI cable and/or aerial fly lead by changing their positions relative to the Freeview+ box and the TV. Also check that the Freeview+ box has not tuned in ArqA from Midhurst on C59 rather than the correct C22+

Steve: Meant also to ask, are the three boxes you refer to of the same manufacture? and if by any chance they are it would be of interest to know the model number of the device.

The other point being, I noticed that you mentioned trying the aerial connected straight into the TV, then unless you find out that your problem is being caused by the reason mentioned by KMJ,Derby and which "is" a distinct possibility, then you should really use a two way powered splitter to feed the signal into your TV and box as this is the only way that guarantees that each device will be receiving exactly the same level of signal.
