Richard Cooper3:33 PM
Carolyn Townshend : Vintage tv is on Freeview channel 82. To get it you need (1) an HD (high definition) Freeview receiver and (2) your local Freeview transmitter needs to transmit the group of channels which contains it. This is known as COM 7. Not all tv transmitters transmit COM7, which is only available to 76% of the population. For one of these two reasons, you may not be able to receive Vintage tv where you are, Carolyn. alan read: Re: Vintage TV (82) Unfortunately not if receiving Freeview from the Reigate transmitter, as this programme is transmitted on Mux COM7 which is not part of the TX (transmitter) line up at Reigate, however DUK indicates that reception of COM7 should be possible in your area from Crystal Palace on Mux33.
Should you already be receiving Freeview from Crystal Palace? and yet are unable to view Vintage TV, then are you able to view BBC HD on 101?, if not, then this is why you are unable to view Vintage TV, as COM7 is an HD transmitter which can only be viewed on a HD receiver fitted with a DVB-T2 tuner, TV's of the "HD ready" variety not coming into this category, as they are only able to view HD images from an external source (e.g: Freeview/ Freesat HD box) via their HDMI input sockets.
By the way, Reigate is located at 6 miles/ 339 degrees with vertically polarised transmission, aerial elements positioned up/down, Crystal Palace located at 17miles/10 degrees with horizontally polarised transmission, aerial elements flat.
Further info / advice given as required.

Which transmitter are you using? If you are using Winter Hill, on a bearing of 288 degrees horizontal, then you should have all the channels as that transmitter provides all the multiplexes in use. If you are using Lees (at 163 degrees), North Oldham (at 295 degrees) or Brook Bottom (at 147 degrees) - all Freeview Lite and vertical polarization - then as they do not transmit all the services you will not get Vintage TV.
Check where your aerial is aimed and whether the small rods are fitted vertically or horizontally. If your aerial is aimed at Winter Hill, can you get BBC1 HD and channel 101? If not then your TV is not equipped with an HD tuner (DVB-T2 type).

Michael: Vintage might be on a mux with a relatively low strength, and if you have an old aerial, check signal strength across the range - the aerial might be on the way out, hence the fluctuation.
BTW - if you click on the digitaluk link you can see the compass bearing for Winter Hill from your house.

Michael : Carry out a signal test check when you are able to view Vintage TV to ascertain the Mux channel number its being received on, as you are indicated by DUK as being able to receive this programme from either Winter Hill on Mux31 or Moel-Y- Parc on Mux32, DUK indicating excellent reception from the former, and although the signal path from Winter Hill is seen to suffer from two line of sight obstructions at around 1 and 2 miles prior to your area, terrain indications suggest them as being of a somewhat minor nature. Although it does have to be admitted that reception problems can occur more frequently in situations where line of sight obstructions are located close to the receiving end of the equation.
You can of course still carry out a signal strength test after reception has dropped out, the procedure being to select "manual tune" in the tuning menu followed by entering Winter Hills 31, but *not* followed by pressing search or scan, as this action allows the tuner to act as a form of signal meter devoid of theshold limitations allowing low level signals to be indicated in the strength/ quality bars.
If indications are a bit erratic from Winter Hills Mux 31, try Moel Y Parc's Mux32 in the manual tune test referred to, although evaluation of the indications received from either station should be used in conjunction with that said by MikeP about checking aerial directions etc.

It's entirely the choice of the operator of Vintage TV. If they don't decide to provide an on-line streaming service then all you can do is watch live on air. It's usually a commercial decision as to whether they want or can provide an internet-based service.

I concur with that stated by StevensOnln1. There is no way you are going to get COM7 at your location. Best to wait until Ofcom and the broadcasters finally agree on what to do with channel allocation to make room for 5G. Remember that it is highly likely that all programmes will use the DVB-T2 format even though some will likely remain as SD services and not go to HD - but a full HD TV will be required.

Vintage TV is transmitted on an HD channel using DVB-T2 encoding. It is available from Sandy Heath and Tacolnston transmitters, though the 'digitaluk trade' link shows that both could be somewhat variable at your location.
You need a TV set capable of receiving Freeview HD to get it. Can you get BBC1 HD on channel 101? If not, then your TV set is not equipped with a DVB-T2 tuner which needed to view Vintage TV and other HD channels.

Janet White: Please provide a full postcode so we can see which transmitter you're using, where you are in relation to it and your predicted signal strength etc. Also, have you checked for any loose cables or connections behind the TV? Vintage TV is broadcast on the same multiplex as BBC News HD (channel 107) so have you checked if this or any other channels are missing? Retuning will not fix a missing channel when nothing has changed with how the channel is broadcast.

If you look at the information about digital reception using the blue digitaluk trade box below you initial posting, you will see that at yiour location COM8 is expected to be poorly received, as are the SDN, ArqA and ArqB multiplexes. These all use horizontal polarisation ( aerial rods horizontal). However, better rception is expected for the latter if you use Vertical polarisation by rotating the aerial rods to be up&down. COM7 and COM8 are not available on the vertical transmissions.
If you want to keep COM7 HD services by keeping your aerial set for horizontal, then you will have to accept that COM8 will be variable.
It has been suggested that COM7 and COM8 may well cease in the next couple of years or so when the services are likely to be transferred to other multiplexes as the frequencies used are changed.

Hello,
I was able to watch Vintage TV channel until very recently.
On mid March I got problems receiving a few channels.
After performing a full retune of the TV I have recovered some of the lost channels, but unfortunately the Vintage channel was lost.
I have noticed that the only COM7 channel I can watch is CBS Drama
My postcode is: TW8 0EA
I guess that the antenna is receiving the signal from Crystal Palace, but it is a communal antenna and I don't really know.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Peter Mckellen: You most likely have a Group A aerial which is not designed to receive the higher frequencies now used by the COM7 & COM8 multiplexes from Crystal Palace. If you don't have satellite or cable you may be eligible to have a replacement wideband aerial fitted free of charge, which can be arranged by contacting the Freeview Advice Line (see link below).
