What price for an aerial installation?

What prices have you been quoted and paid for an aerial installation?

What prices have you been quoted and paid for an aerial install
published on UK Free TV

In responses to the guideline I posted about how much having a new aerial fitted should cost, Ian Grice posted: "£40-£50? Every aerial fitter I contacted wants at least £150+VAT considering you can get a class 3 aerial for under £10 and a class 2 for under £15 and cable is 40p a metre why are they charging so much for 30 minutes work?"

OK, for some places putting up a TV aerial is hard work, such as multi-story properties. As many people will simply be exchanging a Group A, B, C/D, E or K aerial for a wideband type, often without changing the supporting pole or cable, a high price cannot be justified.

I am concerned that some companies will exploit vulnerable groups (such as the elderly).

So, I what prices have you been quoted for aerial installations? What price have you paid for installation?

Do you know of any companies to avoid? Do you know of any companies that are good value for money?

Or do you work for a great aerial installation company?

Ian (rigger)
Very sharp comments I must say!!
There was no argument other than opinionated comments from all party's putting there point forward.
You obviously have missed out this fundamental part of the debate to have a go back.
I agree Brian is working tirelessly on this site and all free advice is in goodwill, but you have become insulting with your comments and abuse, your attitude is exactly what I have been talking about to other
riggers.
If and when I get bored and have some time to kill I will pass through your town to see a d..k on a roof installing an aerial as I have never seen a d..k on a roof before.

Mazbar: Ian as much as i dislike sparks doing my job it doesnt stop there. I was watching help my house is falling down on c4. The idoits who owned the house had let it fall down around them to the point no power was on downstairs. They needed a full re wire cost £5000 but to save them money the presenter told them to put tge cables in themselfs. If they had messed up a spark wiuld have to come in and re do everything himself and still charge the full amount. The show made it sound easy to put the wires in but yiu still need to plan where things go dont you. So i am nit down on sparks but i do feel every man to his own job not a jack of all trades.

Exactly - were not criticising the job anyone does - as long as they are competent at that job I have no idea how to re wire a house and have plenty of friends who are electricians - they call on me to do aerial work - the times a new electrician gets in touch i generally find its because they have screwed up thinking they can do the aerial side - I have helped numerous sparks out of the mire -- the next job they need help on they get me in at the beginning so screw ups are not made! - just typed "Electrician" into my address book - there are 17 that use me (well that I have stored their number in)

Each to there own yes quite right!! Tv shows don't give the correct info eg, we did a new house that a popular gran designs programme wanted to film but demanded to the client that if the presenter was filming elsewhere the build would have to slow down progress or stop and in all programmes there is a pitfall a major problem then an alternative conclusion so the programme can lift the show back up and it's all a big happy ending this is soleley for the programme and viewers,my client decided bad publicity wasn't what they were looking for as they live in a small village. The part p requirement states it's for self certification. The tv presenter you mentioned should not give that advice as the people in the programme would get a certificate for there work but it would have limitations on the installation.

Kb,mazbar!!
Thinking back maybe yes I've been slightly ignorant to the fact the trade you do is somewhat skilled but we only started doing it cause of bad experiences with a couple of riggers and receiving complaints isn't what we are about.
Yes we do wire aerial points in new build hses just didn't have time and effort to lash an aerial up,
Until we were asked constantly then I had my experiences with some riggers and the complaints followed, this is when I thought it needs nipping in the bud.
Each to there own but was kind of forced not to use a rigger and do the work within our trade.

Why do people think that £50 pounds is a fair price to pay for a tv aerial.
It is not about the time worked on the job
what about travling to the job fuel van insurance advertising.
What about the amount of jobs you do in a week do you think a company could make a liveing doing 1 job aday for £50 I think your getting mixed up with working for someone, were you put your hand out and get paid.
there are a lot more things to take into consideration I.E it cost mac donalds £1.10p
to make a big mac meal but they charge £5 for it ...its because we know there is a lot more to pay for than just the burger u get.

Lets look at it another.
You buy an aerial for B&Q cheap on with all the stuff to install £25.00 now you have to put it on the roof ladder hire £15 for the day cat ladder hire £10 for the day then you have to fit it your self O dont forget you need a drill and long reach bit to go double cavity wall £6 if your a diy man and your not bothered about high work then good for you but you can c why £50 to install an aerial is not worth it for a company to make a good living lets face it if you cannot make a good living been self employed you might as well get a job.
To end ...if you pay £50 for a tv aerial and have problems with it you will also have problems getting that company back out in our trade therea loads of cowboys and if you want to pay peanuts for some uninsured idiot to turn up at your own in his family car with a roof rack on then thats up to you

George - Whats astonished me is that The Home help leaflet that can be found in asda sainsburys etc states that an aerial should cost in the region of £60 to £185 - ive been self employed for 10 yrs and cant afford to do an aerial for £60 for all the reasons you stated - you didnt throw in the cost of a decent analyser at say £2000 - but I quite agree with everything you say --

Ian - you need to find that diamond in the rough to help you out! look hard enough and im sure you will get your man ! if I was in the midlands perhaps we could work together

Hey George
The one you should watch for as a rogue aerial installer group is aerial force
www.aerialforce.co.uk
Slough aerials
Wokingham aerials
Didcot aerials
Witney aerials
Reading aerials
Maidenhead aerials
Ascot aerials
Bracknell aerials
Oxford aerial solutions
And many many many more

They are all the same company or any company that does not exist.

They have been on rogue traders 5 times and counting all under different names and know one seems to be able to stop them

The actuall price for an aerial is over £200 plus for a basic aerial and you will never get a recall if needed because as far as they are concerned the engineer does not work for them.

If you look around spot how many companies by you have the same website as these companies.

All around Oxfordshire they have even changed their numbers, don't know how many times a year they do this.

I know for a fact they are spending £150,000 a year plus on advertising so you can well imagine what the income would be on that.
When on rogue traders sites it states that the 2 brothers who own the so called company both own their own helicopters.

This is how these people can advertise aerials for £49-£69 for an aerial fit because they don't fit them for this.

They go up and down the country saying aerials installed for £69

In fact I was in pc world recently trying to get my laptop fixed under warranty without it being sent away for 2 weeks (no chance, don't these people understand you buy a computer for the purpose of work so to be without it for 2 weeks, is impossible)

Anyways when I was in there there was a DVD type case on the counter allowing you to buy a tv aerial installation for X amount. Was a damn good price I thought until I started reading the back.

No bracketry included
No roof work included
No cabling included
And so on

All I could do was laugh, but there is know way of legally shoving your own business card in the boxes

SHAME

I have read the foregoing comments with interest. I do not wish to 'knock' any trade but must say that there are cowboys everywhere. I live in a rented bungalow owned by the Local Authority. Moved in almost four years ago and, reading the electrical report, found that there were no earth bonds to any of the lights. I pointed this out to two 'sparkies' who were sent to change the consumer unit and wire in a point for the new electric fire which had been installed by the plumber when upgrading the central heating to a combi boiler, a month earlier.
After installing mains fed smoke alarms and pushing a 2.5mm twin and earth down the wall in a bit of trunking for the fire, obviously going into the loft to accomplish this, and changing the said consumer unit into which they reconnected the double socket I had installed to feed my washing machine, they left. There is STILL no earth to the light fittings in my home. Is this what 4 years at college produces?
I am told that it is illegal for me to change a light fitting without proper qualifications and that I can go to prison for such an offence.
Some time back whilst delivering to a company's premises, I noticed that the outside lights had been installed by the in-house sparky using Black and Decker flex, (you know the orange stuff to your mower) and queried this whilst enjoying a cup of tea. I was told it's ok 'cos it LOOKS like pyro. I did point out that it was a bit sloppy to join the existing tail from the last lamp, rather than wiring straight into the fitting, my point being that he had cut the tail back to six inches and then, being a clever lad, had left a drip loop under the lamp with the taped joint right in the bottom of it.
The man became a bit agitated and said, "Oh, have you read the 16th edition then?", I said, "NO, not all of it, just the bits that I need to, but it may be interesting to note that the 17th edition has been in force for the last 12 months".
What price training????
