For the last six years, I have answered many thousands of personal emails that you have sent to UK Free TV.
Sadly, I am unable to offer this personal service at the moment.
Until I can restore this service, please can you leave any questions you have on an appropriate page, where they will be answered as soon as possible, or below, if you can't figure out where to ask.
I look forward to your questions!

Is there a design of aerial that may help get more reliable reception through trees? Over the years, gradually, I have placed the aerial in higher positions as my neighbour's trees have grown. When weather is wet and windy, reception is worst (analogue and digital), Tacolneston is due to go fully digital in Nov 2011 and power will increase. The Tx aerial is within visible sight (about 8 miles) and current aerial on chimney is 17 element of correct group but about four years old. I could wait and see if the increased power is enough to get most channels. I have been considering putting two aerials in parallel, about ten inches apart and combining the signals in-phase.
What do you think?

Stephen Jeffs: Basically no! but one thing that does make things worse is using higher gain aerials, as the higher gain generally results in a sharper pick up pattern, this meaning that anything that obstructs the signal path has much more of an effect.
Sometimes in situations like yours removing over half the director elements can give good results, then compensating for any slight signal drop that may be in evidence by using an aerial amplifier.
As you obviously have access to working on the aerial I would try a test using a small aerial like for example a Philex SLX14DW @ £12.99 from Argos, as although noses are liable to be turned up at this idea in certain quarters the fact is that in difficult reception areas where its not distance that is causing the problem, using tricks like this can in many cases bring results, as using larger aerials certainly doesn't!
In theory your idea of using twin phased aerials is good, but getting them correctly lined up could be a very time consuming as far as ensuring that one isn't partially cancelling the other out and vice versa, although it could provide a few interesting hours of experimenting and "may" bring the desired results.

andy: hi JB
signal strengths ar pretty even at about 75% on both feeds.
they stay balanced when trying both leads into feed 1 and into feed 2 .... quality is 95% .
but soon as you go onto say channel 321 , 322 and some others it breaks up and signal 2 goes to zero ( signal 2 is the primary feed)
the only thing i can think of trying next is new cable in the loft as there is a connection( with correct connectors and sealed with tape) and a new twin outlet in the wall to the sky box

Love the story "BBC3 on-demand viewing exceeds original broadcast".
That's probably because you don't get the dreadful BRIGHT PINK LOGO on demand, just the plain smaller BBC one, or none if you are very very lucky. I wish they would repeat BEING HUMAN on BBC ONE as they did with the first series when Question Time was off the air ??

Irmgard: I would think that the most likely explanation is that your dish is not-quite-big-enough. During the night, the signals from the satellites are subject to different atmospheric conditions and this can lead to them being weaker when they reach your dish. A larger dish should ofset this problem.

Briantist: I see that Astra 1N liftoff is scheduled for Friday 5 August 2011. Let's hope it makes it to 28.2 degrees East this time to supplement the Astra 2 satellites.

Our TV 32 inch Freeview flat screen Bush 4 years old,
works well enough clear picture, but initially the picture freezes, starts again then freezes again etc but once it gets going we can watch programme normally, until switching channels, then we go through the freeze process again. Sometimes the programme titles shown briefly at bottom of screen don't match the programme. Is this a TV or aerial problem. Thanking you in anticipation.
