I receive digital transmissions from the Wharfedale, Yorkshire transmitter - however the range of channels currently available is relatively limited (no ITV 3, Dave, Film 4 etc.) I am unable to find any answer from Freeview, but I would be interested to know if there is any plan to extend the range of broadcast channels in the future.

Keith Seymour: This is not likely. See Will there ever be more services on the Freeview Light transmitters? for an explanation.

Keith Seymour: It might be worth trying an aerial pointing at Emley Moor for reception of extra channels. Use a group "B" aerial set for horizontal polarisation and pointing south for Emley Moor - a glance at your neighbour's aerials would show if anyone had already been successful in receiving Emley Moor.

Can anybody please explain to me why there are so many different types of freesat boxes and why the price range can be from £40 - £140? Does it mean that the cheaper boxes do not work or the more expensive ones have more capability? Any advice would be appreciated as to what would be a best buy. Any advice too about what sat dish to buy. I have an old sky digibox which I inherited but no satellite dish. I am on freeview through a combi dvd/VHS player but rely on analogue when digital reception is poor. So am thinking that soon will have to go the freesat route as the least expensive option. All recommendations/advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

sue2201: I can't advise on Freesat boxes, but as far as Freeview (terrestrial) is concerned, when switchover happens, the signal will be stronger and therefore should not be intermittent.

Thank you Dave for your comments. I have been told that the signal from Crystal Palace will increase ten fold so it may make a difference. My concern is that the path from CP to my aerial is obscured by some nearby tall trees which when they come into leaf causes me to lose channels. Whether a ten fold increase will make any difference remains to be seen. Currently I am just exploring possibilities.
Does anyone know whether I can use the Sky digibox to receive Freesat and will it need me to start up some sort of account with Sky to activate it? I will need to buy a dish and have it installed but do not want to sign up to Sky for any subscription package. Again thanks for any help.

Sue 2201: If the trees referred to are reasonably dense and are located from about 100 to 500 feet away, then even when the transmitter is on high power they "might" still have an effect, but its one of these situations that cannot really be accurately predicted so its really a case of wait and see.
As far as Sky's "free to view" and Freesat is concerned there are many similarities between them, with some programmes being on Sky and not on Freesat, and vice-versa.
You do not require any form of subscription with Sky to view the channels referred to, and nothing requires to be altered with your dish either, this even applying to the future should you decide at any point in time to purchase a twin channel Freesat PVR to enable you to record one channel whilst viewing another.
The only qualification to this being that if you did purchase a twin tuner device then the dishes LNB would require to be altered to a quad version and another cable run from it, as twin channel devices require two cables.
By the way quad LNB's are generally under £10.00 and simplicity to install by being a push fit onto the end of the dishes arm.
