I live on the far side of Blackheath from the CP tx and had perfect reception until last Sept when suddenly I couldn't receive a watchable signal on any of the channels on Mux1 (DTV Ch25) i.e. BBC One (London), BBC Two (England), BBC Three, CBBC & BBC News. After a lot of web-searching, inc looking into freesat, fiddling with the aerial (height is critical) and putting up with it eventually the quality returned to normal.

As of a week ago we are back to having exactly the same really poor reception - same channels, same Mux and same symptoms , i.e. can have either this Mux alone with just acceptable quality, or everything else with good stable pictures and sound. but not both.

I found a spare aerial (they are both Wolsey ColourKings) so now there are two on my 20ft pole, but even that's not great nor acceptable in the long-term.

Before you tell me to change the aerial, remember it performed perfectly for many years before this all started about six months ago.

Please help! All and any suggestions welcome.

John Tidy: The problem is that grid aerials don't have very much gain, and have a fairly wide acceptance angle. At that distance from Crystal Palace, you don't need the gain, but you're still at risk of picking up co-channel interference from other transmitters, as well as increased likelihood of too much signal overall.

I would consider getting a small log-periodic aerial, which have better directional properties. You might need to add an attenuator to reduce overall signal levels.

It could simply be due to weather conditions, of course: there are many other transmitters in the country using the same channels, which are normally blocked by terrain but in the right weather conditions, the signals bounce off the atmosphere and cause interference at far-distant locations.

laura: Check whether your box supports 8K mode. There's a list of some equipment that is known not to at http://www.digitaluk.co.u…ment . If it doesn't support 8K mode you'll lose all the remaining channels when switchover completes next Wednesday.

There are still some boxes around that have problems with the larger Network Information Table. This problem shows up when you retune, although you'd have had to not retune for more than two years now. Again, a partial list is at http://www.digitaluk.co.u…tnit .

Do make sure you do a full retune - also called factory reset, first-time installation, virgin mode or default setting. Some boxes even seem to need to have this done with the aerial unplugged to ensure they're completely cleared out before doing it again with the aerial connected. For information on your particular box, see TV Re-tune productmanuals .

If that doesn't explain it, you could have too much signal. If you're sharing a communal aerial, get the landlord or management agent to adjust the levels. If not, try unplugging any amplifiers or boosters that you have. If you don't, you might need to add an attenuator to reduce the levels.

Sirs,

is the D3+4 multiplex, at Crystal Palace, unmdergoing something mechanical ? The signal from this multiplex fails repeatedly and fouls my Alba TV, when I can reach it. Is this multiplex set too high or low ?

I have had this problem since full switchover (DSO).

Andrew Healy,Ashford.Too much signal is most likely the cause, either that or single frequency interference at your location in receiving the D3+4 multiplex from Crystal Palace transmitter.Try a set top aerial or a piece of wire or coat hanger, then ascertain the result whether the D3+4 multiplex is playing games or settled as such !

Mr Fletcher,

when my picture fails, I am using a loft aerial and the signal strength goes so near to zero that my screen pixellates. BBC and Radio transmissions are fine, but, everything from D3+4 is shot. And no, a fully external aerial is not an option- I lodge.

Have found out that a nearby bloke is a radio ham. This is a known source of interference, so have ordered a DTI (digital TV interference) filter, from Amazon- this should remove all ham and possibly taxi radio signals. Many thanks for your help, Mark.
