Why have I been sent a filter for my Freeview?

Starting 29th April 2013, the third phase test for the at800 interference to Freeview is taking place. For this test, filters are being sent out to all homes at risk before the test starts. The area chosen for this third test is West London, including Isleworth - the home of satellite pay broadcaster, British Sky Broadcasting.

published on UK Free TV

At800, the people who are going to stop interference from the new mobile internet services (4G) when they start in the old analogue TV frequencies (called the 800MHz band) are performing a third test in the Isleworth area.

The test area is approximately:

Homes which are thought to be at risk from the interference will be sent a special filter before the test signals are broadcast.

This is to allow at800 to find out if sending filters out first is the most effective way of preventing people having problems. This is to compare to the second-phase trail in south west London, where leaflets are sent, but each householder has to call in to be sent a filter (and possibly an engineer).

The filter looks like this:

This will need to be fitted to the back of the Freeview box (if there is only one in use) or to the aerial side of an amplifier, if one is in use.

Hi, I live in Wirral, Merseyside and connect to the Winter Hill transmitter. For the past month myself and many others living in the area using freeview have been experiencing garbled pictures, loss of picture for a few seconds, complete loss of certain channels including BBC1, channel 4 and others, and sometimes complete loss of all channels after a retune, I have tried retuning with the aerial out then retuning again with the aerial in but still no channels/improvements.

So I ask what are the issues with freeview in this area and what do I have to do to fix these problems?

As far as attenuation of the 800Mhz band is concerned is it a 'one size fits all' low/band pass filter or will there be different versions depending on location? (Not meaning different physical versions like indoor or outdoor, but different attenuation characteristics.)
Are you able to state a figure for the worst case attenuation of the filter in the freeview band?
Thanks

Paul H- are you definitely getting your signals from Winter Hill ?
There's been a few posts on here from your area complaining about break up and Welsh news?
Can you put some manual tuning frequencies on here or check them yourself?

Angela Davenport- If the filter is fitted properly and there is still a problem, I doubt you needed 1 or that was the only problem?

Dear Sir/Madam.
i live on the south coast near Worthing iv lost 3 channels & Itv 4 is terrible i thought i had cured it by instaling a new top box then i found i didnt need my signal booster, it was fine for a while, could you tell me why the government are allowing 4g to transmit on this frequency. Surely this shouldn't be allowed. For years iv had uninterrupted UHF TV which i paid a licensing fee for. I am still paying this so shouldn't it remain so. Yours Sincerely.

Stephen Skinner: It's allowed because there are no other better frequencies available, and so as to harmonise with other parts of the world.

The Licence Fee allows one to receive broadcast television; it does not give any guarantee as to reception, whether that be a signal being present or free from interference.

Your complaint is about reception of (at least) one of the Commercial (COM) channels. These don't have as wide a coverage as the Public Service (PSB) channels which carry the likes of BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Therefore you may be in a location where reception of the COMs is likely to be intermittent, or adjustment to your aerial may be of benefit in getting more solid reception of the COM channels.

For an explanation of why we now have a two-tier terrestrial television transmitter network see:

Londonderry (Northern Ireland) Freeview Light transmitter | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice

If your aerial is directed to Rowridge on the Isle of Wight then it broadcasts horizontally and vertically and has been doing so since April last year when the COM channels took up their final positions. Horizontally the COM channels aren't as strong whereas vertically they are, so switching to vertical polarisation is advisable where reception issues are experienced. There is no requirement for a different aerial, unless it is somehow physically defective of course.

If you receive from Findon then it only carries PSB channels and you are lucky some of the time to get the COMs because they are being received off-beam of the aerial. In which case the advice is to have an aerial fitted that is pointing at the full-service tranmsitter.
