jb38 since doing the SW update I no longer have any signal strength showing on tuner 2 and having done a cable swap for a re test I still have non however I am sure that I had good reception on the second tuner last evening as I did a recording while watching another channel which I could not have done if there was no signal on the second tuner. Any one have any clues if there is any thing in the setup menu that may have an incorrect value in store.

DaveG: Pleased to see that your software update was successful, albeit partially insomuch that your box still doesn't respond to your post code thereby being unable to select the satellite transponder containing the programme data appropriate to your area.

Although It has to be said that some post codes applicable to newer build properties are not always recognised by some Freesat boxes, I can however verify that yours is operational on my box as is the Eye post offices of PE6 7UU.

As far as channels received are concerned, using both post codes referred to results in a total of 202 programme channels being received, 165 TV / 37 radio, the limited number being received on your box possibly being due to it not picking up some of the transponders used for Freesat, this being something which might be due to the dishes LNB not switching to high band operation when commanded to do so by the box, therefore I would like you to try a test by selecting a BBC or ITV programme (or any that works) and then go into "diagnostics" and check that signal strength / quality are indicating roughly the same levels of around 70% or higher, if they are OK then go into the programme guide and select Pick TV on 144, if that's received then check if you can view Challenge on 145, because if its possible to view both then that confirms that the LNB is OK on both vertical and horizontal polarity on the high band.

Further info dependant on results.

DaveG : If you have returned the two LNB inputs back to their original positions then try disconnecting the box from the mains via rear switch (if convenient) followed by swapping the two leads over, finally power the box up again and carry out another Freesat auto tune to (hopefully) reload the channels into the No2 tuner.

By the way, the two tuners in the box cannot be controlled individually.

jb38 thanks for the follow up info lets start from the top of the 6.42 pm post I have tried the PE6 7UU post code and the box result is invalid code again so moving on to the next item I selected the ITV HD channel and went to diagnostics and have a strength reading of 80% but only 60% quality although I notice on some channels the quality is 70% is the 60% to low as the picture is very good. The next part unable to do as neither Pick or Challenge channels are showing on the scan results list. I will try the second entry timed 7.58 PM on Thursday and post my results on here.

DaveG: Until you are able to get a signal off 11428H and enter your postcode and thereby enter Freesat Mode you will be stuck in Non-Freesat Mode.

In non-Freesat mode your Humax behaves as a generic FTA satellite box with arbitrary channel numbers that begin at 5000 and EPG limited to "Now and Next" (at 28 degrees East).

Freesat mode provides both an 8 day EPG and the channel numbers assigned by Freesat.

In Freesat mode, all the channels appropriate to your postcode will appear in your channel list regardless of whether you have a signal for them. This is because the full channel list is read from the Home transponder.

jb38 from your last entry I have tried this swap and run but the results are no luck so I have changed them back so at least I have tuner one working.

js thanks for you info regarding the way Freesat works and an answer why I am not getting very far can you give me any idea what is the cause of the problem and how it is possible to correct it. Thanks

DaveG: I am beginning to suspect that your main problem is possibly due to your box being unable to receive horizontally polarised channels irrespective of the band that they may be operating on, this being why 11427 H was not seen when you tried to select it on a manual scan test, therefore I would like you to try another test on the boxes "manual tune" facility then on transponders by selecting 10773 H 22000 by inching along the transponder list using the right hand side of the large selection button on the remote control, the transponder frequency given containing BBC1 East (W).

Band switching problems are usually caused by an LNB port fault, however as the situation had apparently remained the same even after having swapped the LNB inputs followed another rescan this could point to your box having a defective tuner, as the ports on a multi-output LNB work independently from each other.

jb38: DaveG said "many of the TV channels are repeated such as Channel 4 first 5 entries on my results list"

This is a horizontally polarised transponder.

DaveG: My guess is the dish/LNB is slightly out of alignment.

Set it up on Eutelsat 28A.

If you can tune to any of the Eutelsat 28A transponders shown below then maximise the signal Quality by adjusting LNB skew and, if necessary, dish position.

The block from 11200 to 11450 MHz belongs to Eutelsat 28A and these transponders are the first to go when conditions are poor.

Three reasons why this might be so:

ASTRA satellites interleave in frequency and polarisation. Eutelsat 28A reuse the same frequency. For example:

ASTRA
10714,H,22000,56
10729,V,22000,56
10744,H,22000,56

Eutelsat 28A
11222,H,27500,23
11224,V,27500,23
11260,V,27500,23
11261,H,27500,23
11307,H,27500,23
11307,V,27500,23
11343,V,27500,23
11345,H,27500,23
11390,H,27500,23
11390,V,27500,23
11426,V,27500,23
11428,H,27500,23

So, on Eutelsat 28A, the wanted signal is sitting on a signal of opposite polarisation. Correct LNB skew is thus required.

Note: ASTRA satellites have an inbuilt skew offset of 7 degrees, Eutelsat 28A does not.

All the transponders below 11200 (that means ASTRA and all the PSB channels) are using UK focussed beams. Eutelsat 28A uses a pan-European beam so the radiated power is spread over a wider area.

ASTRA satellites are positioned at 28.2E whereas Eutelsat 28A is at 28.5E degrees.
