To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Steve Robinson:

Bilsdale is still transmitting COMs 7&8 and at the last retune on Nov.13th when they moved to C55/C56 the power was also increased to 26 & 27kW. One problem could be because of the way Single Frequency Networks (SFNs) operate, which COMs 7&8 are, there can be Not spots. Are you getting the Local multiplex on UHF C30?
We are going to need a full postcode to look at the Freeview Detailed Coverage Checker to see what the predicted reception is at your location.

A Wideband aerial is really needed for all multiplexes from Bilsdale, some Group K aerials may get C55&56 if you aren't in a weak signal area. If however you've got a very old maybe group A aerial, you will be unlikely to get them even with a strong signal

Doug:

I assume your aerial is pointing at Emley Moor from which you should get very good reception of all multiplexes which means you should get 145 TV and Radio channels (if your set has an HD tuner, ~113 without HD).
I hope you are aware that there was a "retune event" recently for Emley Moor (the last of the currently planned multiplex moves to different UHF channels).

Emley's Multiplexes & UHF channels are now as follows, in the order -
PSBs1/BBCA, PSB2/D3&4, PSB3/BBCB HD, COM4/SDN, COM5/ArqA, COM6/ArqB, COM7 HD, COM8 HD, & Local
C47, C44, C41, C33, C36, C48, C55, C56, & C39.

I'd suggest you unplug the aerial and do an automatic retune which should clear all current tuning as no channels will be found. Plug the aerial back in and repeat the retune, hopefully all your channels should be restored.

If you are still missing channels, it could be that you have an old grouped aerial rather than a Group T /Wideband. Then you should ring the Freeview Helpline on 0808-100-0288 where they should offer to organise a replacement aerial free of charge if you don't have Satellite or Cable.

Stuart Dearlove; we receive our signal from the Newton, Northumberland, transmitter. We currently get about half of the possible Freeview channels. Can this be improved?

Stuart Dearlove: Newton is a lite transmitter which only broadcasts around 20 SD and 6 HD channels. If you provide a full postcode we can check whether you may be able to receive more channels from another transmitter, or alternatively you could look at getting Freesat.

Francis Heron:

Towards the end of last week, there was some "Tropospheric Propagation" that sometimes comes with high pressure (less common at this time of year, more frequent in summer) - this causes signals to travel further and so distant transmitters in he UK & Europe can interfere with our own signals.

If your set is setup to "auto-update" if it "sees" any transmitter changes, then it could have tuned itself to signals it no longer can get!

I'd suggest you unplug the aerial and do an automatic retune. This should clear all previous tuning as no channels will be found. Plug the aerial back in and repeat the retune and this should restore all your channels correctly.

If this doesn't work, post back with a few more details about your installation, how old your aerial is, do you have any (amplified) splitters etc., have you made any changes recently? There have been no changes at Emley Moor since the retune event on the 5th February which I assume you carried out. There were no power changes involved with that event.

Iain Fisher:

Without a full postcode we cannot look at which transmitter(s) you may receive and how good the signal may be at your location.
The best we can suggest at this point is -

Check all your coax plugs, connections, flyleads etc, unplug connectors check for corrosion or other problems and reconnect them. Flyleads are a common problem, try swapping/changing them. See what signal strengths and quality you are getting for the multiplexes shown in your TV's tuning section. Also check that your downlead looks undamaged (especially if it is old) and that your aerial seems intact and pointing in the correct direction.
Problematic connections, water ingress etc. can seem to affect reception of just an individual or several multiplexes.

Have you moved anything about, or connected new equipment?
Sometimes HDMI leads near unscreened/poorly screened flyleads/aerial leads can cause interference.
