Geoff: It would probably be better to wait until after switchover before doing any work on the aerial, if this proves to be necessary.The transmission will be 10 times stronger on the PSB muxes and 5 times stronger on the COM muxes. After switchover it is best to use a Group A receiving aerial, especially in poor signal areas for Ridge Hill. At present, if it is Ridge Hill you are receiving for freeview (BBC1 Midlands)it would appear that you have a wideband aerial.

a schulen: If you cancel Sky you will continue to receive free to air channels via your Sky box. You will not of course be able to view those channels which are part of the Sky subscription package on satellite but are FTA on Freeview. You can only use a sky dish for a receiver with an integrated satellite tuner. If the receiver only has an integrated Freeview tuner it will require connection to a UHF tv aerial to receive channels.

Paul Jameson : have you tried channel 8 in your channel list for C4? This would be the usual position when S4C occupies position 4.

David: Midhurst does not yet transmit the Freeview HD mux. This is due to start at stage two of the switchover in 2012.The reason for MuxC and MuxD not being available in many parts of the Midhurst coverage area is the presence of analogue signals for ITV1 on C60 (Reigate) and C64 (Heathfield), which block reception of the digital signals.

Alex: I think you answered your own question. To be fair some DIY jobs are done perfecly well but cost less because the installer has no overheads. And some professionals will fit a benchmarked aerial and cable but the aerial is mounted where it points direcly into a roof or brick wall, the aerial is not assembled correctly (especially true of DAB radio aerials), splitters are left swinging in the wind or a wideband aerial is fitted for a transmitter only using group A channels. In these situations the householder usually thinks they have paid for the best installation until reception problems occur or someone points out that the installation is not performing as well as expected.

Geoff Howson: If you are receiving Freeview with good reception on your tv you should be ok with the HD mux if it is transmitted in your area.You should only need a replacement or additional aerial if your area has not switched over yet and you have to pick up the HD mux from a different transmitter or you are able to receive a temporary service which is transmitted at lower power than the other muxes which results in poor signal pick up. If there is no HD signal at all in your area you will have to wait for switchover anyway, after which you will have the full power HD mux available.

Mrs Radia: The Digital UK postcode checker predicts a full freeview service is available at your location, including HD from the Crystal Palace transmitter. If you are using the Hemel Hempstead relay (aerial mounted with rods vertical) reception is a mixed bag and is likely to get worse. Changing to CP would be advised in this case.In any case check cables and connectors for damage or poor contact.

Phil: According to the Digital UK postcode checker you should be able to receive all six muxes with good reception direct from Winter Hill. Use a group C/D receiving aerial set for horizontal polarisation. The Town Hall relay is a PSB only transmitter.

Frank: I don't think reception will deteriorate on all transmitters to the extent that you have no channels.I tried a couple of postcodes and Crystal Palace, Sandy Heath and Sudbury all offer full Freeview to various parts of the locality. Basically if you enjoy good analogue reception now you should receive the PSB muxes without problems. The COM muxes could in some areas be affected by signals from other transmitters on the same frequency, however you should be able to receive a useable signal from one of the alternative sites if this became a problem.

Derrick: The freeview prediction databases tend to give a conservative estimate of the possible coverage. The Digital UK database has access to information which is not not freely available so is sometimes more accurate. According to Digital UK Bilsdale is the only transmitter offering freeview before switchover but not on all muxes. After switchover it shows Whitby as giving the best signal for the PSB muxes but Bilsdale will still offer the best (only) signals for the COM muxes.
