Derek McLean: There are two launch dates which apply to local TV. The multiplex launch has taken place on time, with Bonanza Bonanza as the only service currently using the multiplex now being available from Craigkelly. The second launch date is that of the Local TV service which in most cases is somewhat later than originally anticipated. The date currently shown on another site for Local TV in Edinburgh is August 2014.

Briantist: BBC1 West could be added to the ITV West mux on the Ridge Hill transmitter, together with Radio Gloucester. Possibly six local radio stations is rather optimistic for every West Midlands area Freeview transmitter , maybe requiring The Wrekin and Ridge Hill to be sub-regions with regards to local radio coverage.

daved: No. It has however effectively changed frequency for London and Granada with respect to the stream that is now intended to be used by Freesat receivers. Unfortunately some models of receiver do not appear to update changes that are made to services that are already stored in the epg, consequently when the old frequency closed some viewers were left with "no signal" displayed when selecting ITV HD. In such cases a re-tune will be needed to restore reception of the affected services.

Aerialman: Surely the audience for BBC1+1 is likely to be considerably greater than that for BBC4. I have always wondered whether COM7 would really encourage the purchase of DVB-T2 equipment as so few people care whether BBC4 or BBC News is HD as they don't watch it anyway.

BBC Four HD
Friday 7 March 2014 1:16AM

Paul: That would increase the transmission costs quite considerably for BBC4. If the BBC1+1 service has more viewers than BBC4, which seems very likely, it makes more sense for the HD capacity to serve the greater potential audience.

Ed: Yes, enter any postcode that is situated in the Waltham coverage area into the Digital UK "tradeview" postcode checker, (or for a short cut, click on I's DigitalUK tradeview box above), scroll to the table for Waltham then hover over 31 in the COM7 column. This should reveal the technical details for COM7. When a date for the service to commence is known it will appear alongside the "retune" line in the table.

Ed: I should have said that the shortcut refers to the link from "ian from notts" post on 6th March 2014.

trevorjharris: Financing via subscription isn't perfect either. Take Sky, a card with a Sky Sports subscription can't be used with a box in another room or taken on holiday with the subscriber. This can result in paying several times over for the same thing or a lot of inconvenience swapping boxes around. Regarding the subsidising of broadband roll-out, the government could, if approved in parliament, hi-jack part of a Sky subscription or impose a levy on commercial TV companies in order to finance the scheme.
