MikeB: It is worth noting that local radio doesn't work either in London. Commercial stations have mostly become feeders for "national" networks. BBC Radio London, consequently, would be expected to have large percentage of the listeners but this too struggles to find an audience. Birmingham and Manchester for some reason also have a section of the population that has little interest in local matters. Local TV might be more successful in those areas that also value their local radio stations.

Made in Cardiff
Wednesday 15 October 2014 10:15PM

Clive lloyd: Whereabouts in Wales are you trying to receive Made in Cardiff? If you are in North Wales, receiving Bay TV Liverpool, there is no way you will receive Made in Cardiff as the signal does not reach any where near North Wales.

Dave Lindsay: According to the Television Broadcast Licensing Update 2014, on 8th April 2014 Ofcom's Broadcast Licensing committee considered and approved a request from Comux to change the frequency of the Oxford local multiplex to C29 in order to extend the coverage area.

There does appear to be a similar pattern between the performance of channels on both Freeview and Sky lists. This rather suggests that position in the channel list has much less influence over what people watch than broadcasters would admit. I do not watch a great deal of TV, however, like Jack I use a listings magazine to get an idea of what might be of interest. I then enter the channel number directly into the tv remote to select the channel. This is often 800 for BBC1 East Midlands on the TV at work! Habit (or familiarity) certainly plays a part when deciding what to watch, plus the fact that the programmes that are new, or have the broadest appeal are usually put on BBC1 and ITV. I used to have cable TV, the only
"alternative" channel that I regularly viewed was UK Gold after Carlton Select and Bravo (the timewarp television version) had stopped broadcasting.

steve: Local TV for Cardiff is transmitted from Wenvoe on C51, local TV for Bristol from Mendip, also on C51. At your location you appear to have robust signals from Mendip but reception from Wenvoe according to the DUK predictions looks to be somewhat iffy. This suggests that if there is any signal for Made in Cardiff reaching your aerial it is being drowned out by the Made in Bristol signal..There is certainly no prediction for Made in Cardiff being possible, even with poor reception!

John: With regard to DAB radio, the Newton mast should have the BBC national DAB multiplex added in the near future. The local DAB plan does show Newton as one of a number of sites required to bring coverage of the Tyne & Wear 11C multiplex up to the current level of FM services from BBC Newcastle, Metro FM and other independant local/regional radio stations. The timescale for expanding the 11C coverage is unclear, there being no real hurry until such time that a DSO for radio is announced.

Having problems with TV background music?
Sunday 2 November 2014 1:30PM

MikeB: Why don't manufacturers provide extension speaker sockets? This would solve the poor quality sound problem for many viewers.

Mike Johnson: Have you looked if there are any channels listed in the 800s at the end of the channel list? If you have signals from both Crystal Palace and Bluebell Hill available it would be usual to find alternative versions for BBC1 and ITV stored as well as those occupying the normal channel positions.

Ben: Give 10B for Derbyshire a try from Wednesday 19th November 2014, when according to BBC Radio Derby the East Staffs DAB transmitter at Lichfield will be switched on.

Tiverton (Devon, England) DAB transmitter
Monday 17 November 2014 5:35PM

John McGrath: DAB coverage in Devon is somewhat sparse at present, there is a planned roll-out of the BBC national multiplex to a number of relay sites to fill many of the gaps. The Tiverton mast already carries the BBC national services, as you have discovered. In the event of an FM switch-off affecting the larger local stations it is planned to improve the coverage of the local Exeter and Torbay block 11C multiplex, which carries BBC Devon, Capital and Heart (plus others). Tiverton is one of the sites which will, by then, transmit this local mux. There is an agreement that funding for this improvement will be shared by the BBC, the commercial stations and the government. There is however no great hurry being shown for this work to be carried out, especially as the population served by each additional transmitter is relatively small (Tiverton serves just over 3% of the population in the intended coverage area) and each transmitter has to be line fed for local services.
