Roy: if you had given an indication of the location where you wish to listen to Radio Solent on DAB, preferably with a postcode or that of a nearby shop, advice with a greater degree of accuracy could be offered. Roughly speaking the service on 96.1Mhz FM is transmitted on DAB block 11C (South Hampshire) and the 103.8Mhz FM service is found on DAB block 11B ( Bournemouth). Additionally the coverage of Radio Solent on Freeview for TV viewers has been extended over a much larger area than that covered by FM or DAB.

Liam: in order to answer the question we need to know where you are, preferably with a postcode or that of a nearby shop, so a check can be made of which transmitters are receivable at your location. Usually, if an aerial in Northamptonshire has been pointed at Sutton Coldfield (Birmingham) it is because the signal from Waltham or Sandy Heath which would normally be used is not particularly good.

John Marsh: there was a modest increase in power at the original sites for the Liverpool local DAB multiplex. Additionally new transmitters at Moel y Parc (1.2kW) and WinterHill (3.0kW) have extended the coverage area.

Richard Cooper: yes, I wish the broadcasters would provide links to live streams of each of their channels. I would love to have BBC 1 East Midlands, BBC1 E York's and Lincs and Calendar South (YTV) available in one click on my tablet. The manufacturers of internet boxes could help too by producing a set top box with programmable buttons on the remove to access the viewers favourite streams. A scart socket would be a must on such a box to support older receivers!

LAURA MOSS: is it only ITV2 and Channel 5 that are not performing correctly? If ITV and Channel 4 are OK it would suggest that channels that can be identified as 'London region' are being received from Crystal Palace, assuming 'London' was selected as the preferred region, whilst the troublesome channels are being received from an alternative transmitter. If you are able to access a signal strength screen on you receiver compare the strength, quality and frequency of the working channels with those of the troublesome ones for clues towards identifying the problem. If interference is affecting the PSB2 mux that delivers your ITV2 and Channel 5 try changing the position of any HDMI cables relative to the receiver and aerial cable, also relocate the modem as this has been found to be an interference source in some situations.

Richard: further to Richard Cooper's post regarding the Scoval transmitter, I have done a bit of delving and basically the antenna at the top of the mast serves an area in the West of Skye with a vertically polarised signal and transmitter power of 32w on each of the three PSB muxes. The antenna sited partway up the mast at 15m agl sends a narrow beam across Little Minch to the mast at Clettraval. This signal is horizontally polarised and transmits each of the PSP muxes at 132w. The purpose of this beam is to provide a feed for the DTT services transmitted from Clettraval. Photos of the antennas at Scoval can be found on the mb21 website.

KayPind: what is on channel 7? If you are receiving signals from Wenvoe, Channel 4 would normally appear at position 7 (used to be 8) in the channel list with S4C at position 4.

Richard Cooper: Hi Richard, local tv in England had the choice of migrating to 7 from 8, or keeping position 8 following the closure of BBC3 as a DTT channel. Somewhat oddly (in my opinion) many chose to occupy position 7 despite the local tv in Wales and Scotland being allocated position 8, with Channel 4 in Wales and BBC Alba in Scotland moving to 7. The situation in overlap areas gets a bit complicated with the first frequencies found in the scan and any regional choice that may have been selected both playing a part in the final position in the epg for any programme service. Regarding the overlap between Wenvoe and Mendip, due to the local tv services from both transmitters using the same frequency (C51), it is possible that in some locations the signals interfere with each other resulting in no local tv being found at all.

Alan: in 2009 Ofcom licenced a self help transmitter to serve Ladram Bay Holiday Park. If this is still in use signals are received from Stockland Hill and retransmitted on C49 (PSB1), C55 (PSB2), C48(PSB3), C54(COM4), C56(COM5) and C58(COM6). I am not aware as to which polarisation is used for this transmitter, but as three of the frequencies are shared with the public service relay at Sidmouth it would be logical for the self help to use horizontal polarisation in order to minimise co-channel interference from/to signals transmitted by Sidmouth. Using a log periodic aerial would give the best chance of minimising the effects of co-channel interference, together with careful alignment in some situations being necessary to receive whichever is your chosen transmitter.
