Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat

Ned: Its true that Freesat has certain advantages of Freeview, but Freeview is a bit more flexible. As Mike points out, you comparing apples and pears - they both have good points. Ironically, because you've both systems, you possibly have too much choice!

If you want to replace Sky + with a Humax Freesat PVR, thats easy. But you will need an LNB on the dish for each Freesat tuner. 2 on the PVR, one on the TV (some TV's do have them built in), and an extra - thats a quad, and pretty easy to retro fit. But if you have TV's elsewhere, then it can get more complex. There is a discussion about this on this thread: Freesat reception - all about dishes

All TV's have Freeview (or in a perfect world, Freeview HD) tuners. The bulk of PVR's are Freeview. Freesat or other sat systems are a lot thinner on the ground - LG and Sony often now have generic sat. tuners in the back, although they dont tend to shout about it. However, a seperate Freesat tuner will cost around fifty quid.

So in terms of choice and easy of connection, Freeview tends to be easier. However, there is no reason you can't do both. Freesat for the main TV/PVR (and the aerial can go to the TV as well), and Freeview for everything else. Frankly, you could run Sky, Virgin, Freeview, Freesat and stream to a modern TV - why you want to is another matter!

Dave Lindsay: To be fair to you, the Ladder Hill transmitter isn't exactly far away either!

The question we would all like to ask is why Andy has a signal booster at all? Frankly, you could argue he might do fine without the aerial!

S L Chaytors: If you check on the R & T link, everything seems fine with the transmitter, so it must be your system.

Check back from the TV, but its probably a broken cable, water in the system, etc

See this page: I have now lost all signal can you tell me what the problem might be?

maureen stygall: I dont know whether your tuned to Sandy Heath or Waltham, but I'm in PE1 and everything is fine on Waltham. R & T reckons Sandy Heath is OK as well.

Sounds like a problem with your aerial system.

Ned: If you include a postcode, we can try and work out what might work.

Richard: Why does ITV have a problem, when it 'buys too many programmes in especially children's ones' ? What is it supposed to show - a blank screen?

Roger: If your tuned into Tiverton, your just 2km away! BBC channels tend to be stronger than the rest, so if your tuner is sensitive like the Humax (and the Panasonic, it has to be said), then it can be overloaded, and so start to break up.

Check the signal strength, and then which transmitter. Look for more info here: Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you

David Evans: Indoor aerials are normally a bit rubbish, but since your just 1km from the Burbage light transmitter, and 3km from Buxton, you might be perfectly fine. Ofcourse if you want more that the light transmitter channels, you going to need a bigger boat!

Connecting it all up | Installing
Tuesday 18 November 2014 11:07AM

Tony Kilvert: A simple wiring diagram should be in the manual of both devices. However, all you need to do is loop through the recorder so that the Tv also gets a signal, and attach an HDMI lead to connect the recordert to theTV
