Geoff:

Which transmitter are you trying to use? According to the service area map just at the bottom of your posting yopu could get either Waltham or Sutton Coldfield. Waltham is North East of you only around 27km away and Sutton Coldfield is almost due West but some 52 km away.

Is your problem affecting all channels?

What is the signal strength shown as? If it is above 80% then it is too strong and that can cause picture break up.

I assume you have checked all the connections through from the aerials to each TV set?

Dexter:

Not knowing the box you have, but having used several different ones over the years, does your User Manual tell you anything about putting in a code to match your TV so that the remote can operate some of the TV functions?

I use an LG TV and a Sky HD box and the Sky remote takes the code given in the manual (there are several given for different TVs) to let me control some functiopns on the TV and the Sky box.

Note that even a 'universal' remote control needs to be set up to operate your particular equipment - there are no internationally agreed codings across all manufacturers so each remote has to be set up first.

Ste Byrne:

If you look at the posts above yours you will see that engineering work is being done on that transmitter and has been on-going for a few days. They never indicate when the work will finish as it depends on weather and any unexpected problems the engineers may find.

Mr Thomson:

I would suggest you seek the advice of whoever is installing the equipment for you. In my experience the installation of a dish, cables and box should not normally take more than 2 hours but depends on factors such as an difficulties found with mounting the dish or routing the cables.

Map of all DAB transmitters

DAB reception problems? Please read the story at BBC News which suggests the problem is potentially caused by the withdrawl of a GPS satellite that is used by DAB to synchronise transmissions. That withdrawl allowed a timing error so the DAB system had serious problems.

Hope that information is informative to everyone worried about DAB reception.

Andreas:

Further to that said by Mikesey, you should check to see if there is a terrestrial aerial in the loft space. If there is, that may be usable for Freeview terrestrial transmissions. If you have a fairly recent TV set that may well have a Freeview tuner built-in.

Roy Bracy:

It is very unlikely to the the temproray traffic lights causing the problem.

For any contributor to this website to offer any meaningful help we really need you to put your post code into the site. That way it will display several blue boxes under your postings, which will include details of your local transmitter, any terrain issues like hills or mountains, details of the availab le transmitters, etc, etc.

Further advice depends on that information being supplied by you.

How old is your dish? Most will last more than 10 years and good ones probably longer. Before I moved I'd had one in place for over 22 years!.

MikeG:

I rather agree, having lived in a very rural hamlet and struggled to get 1-2 Mbps 'broadband' - plus I used to work in the domestric TV industry.

The problem as I see it is that Ofcom are charged with regulating both the telecoms sector as well as the broadcast entertainment sector - which appear to incompatible with each other as the telecoms people want to make even more money from preople using what were mobile phones but are now cash cows in the form of portable entertainment systems, otherwise known as 'smart phones'.

Analogue TV worked very well for more than forty years with few serious problems and very little loss of channels. Digital on the other hand does suffer from various shortcomings, just look at a selection of the pages here to see some of the problems people have with it.

Governments are, in my humble opinion, not the best people to decide about technological matters - but they wield the power to decide for us. And inevitably they rarely make the best choices.
