Eve: Although it could possibly suggest that, its not really possible to check the status of the transmitter covering your area unless your location is known, this in the form of a post code or one from nearby, e.g: a shop / post office.

David Petersen: Waltham's PSB3 Mux is being received OK down here in the Stamford area. If you are still unable to receive it? carry out a "manual" tune on C58.

Peter : In addition to that said by MikeB, try carrying out a retune on your TV with the aerial downlead being connected directly into it, rather than (its assumed) the aerial looping through the recorder.

If this results in the missing channels being restored, then your system would possibly benefit by the addition of a three way powered splitter, this device guaranteeing that everything connected into each of its three output sockets will be receiving the same level of signal.

However, it should also be kept in mind that engineering work is presently being carried out at Waltham, a notice warning of a "possible weak signal" having been posted on the engineering notice board as from the 5th.

Robert Boulton: Caradon Hill is indicated on DUK's reception predictor as providing a first class signal in the postal code area mentioned, talking pictures (81) being broadcast on C31 by Caradon's COM7 HD Mux.

Others programmes broadcast by COM7 HD being : (106) BBC Four HD / (58) Viva / (71) Motors.

It should though be appreciated that these programmes can only be received on TV's or boxes capable of receiving HD broadcasts, that is equipment fitted with DVB-T2 tuners.

Hannington (Hampshire, England) transmitter
Monday 19 October 2015 11:14PM

Ossie Nelson: Have you as yet, ascertained if the problem referred to is also being experienced by anyone else in your immediate area?.

However apart from that, although you may well have carried out the automatic retune procedure, but though, did you carry out a "reset" on the TV prior to the automatic retune?. Reset also being known on some brands as "default setting" / "first time installation" etc.

The reason for mentioned the latter being, that if the tuner has developed some form of glitch, resetting the TV prior to carrying out the auto-tune is about the only thing you can do to help rectify the problem, this procedure being reinforced by disconnecting the TV from the mains for 10 seconds or so after having carried out the reset, then followed by powering it up again and carrying out the auto-tune.

Another point I was wondering about being. Although you have mentioned perfect reception on ITV, what does this equate to as far as signal strength / quality indications are concerned if you carry out a signal test whilst on this channel?.

Lynsey : Although as said by MikeP, a subscription will be required in order to view a number of HD channels that are not dedicated as being part of a Sky package, a full subscription being required for those that are, however, you "will" be able to view HD channels on your box from Public Service Broadcasters etc without any subscription being required, e.g: BBC1-2-3-4 HD including CBeebies HD / CBBC HD / BBC News HD / ITV HD/Ch4 HD / RT HD/ NHK world HD, no others being possible that I am aware of.

Wenvoe (Cardiff, Wales) Full Freeview transmitter
Saturday 24 October 2015 11:34PM

Jonathan W: Your problem is basically down to the Mendip transmitter (@ 33 mls /146 degrees) being the station indicated as providing a superior signal to your area over that from your preferred station, namely Wenvoe (@ 15 mls / 219 degrees). The signal from the latter being inferior because of the signal path from same suffering from three line-of-sight obstructions starting from approximately 4 miles out prior to your aerial, L.O.S obstructions having a far greater effect on reception the nearer they are located to the receiver.

A google rooftop check of your area shows aerials pointing in a number of directions, even one mounted to receive vertically polarised transmissions, possibly from Pontypool (@ 2 mls / 352 degrees), albeit that DUK does not indicate this station as being receivable at your location, its BBC being on C23 - ITV C26.

But though the whole issue depends on which transmitter your aerial is facing towards, because should it be Mendip?, then its most unlikely that anything would be indicated on a manual tune of Wenvoe's BBC (C41) or ITV (C44), as the aerial would be positioned not that terribly far away from its dead spot for reception, that of 90 degrees from the signal.

Motors TV
Sunday 25 October 2015 12:39PM

michele ciniero: If you are also unable to view EPG numbers 81 (Talking pictures) or 106 (BBC Four HD) but can 101, 103 ect, then the problem referred to is most likely caused by the boxes software not having been updated since it was manufactured, this update being released at a later date in order to overcome the problem of the box not being able to respond to more than one HD Mux, e.g: the main being 101/2/3/4 etc, 71 (COM7) being secondary to this.

Should the aforementioned (EPG number info) apply, go into the boxes set up menu / configuration / software update and check the software number, the latest version is V2.58, the old version being V2.39.

If, as suspected, V2.39 is seen then this could well pose a problem for your friend, as "over-air" software updates are not necessarily forthcoming from Vestel, (the manufacturer) and so the updating procedure has to be done via a download from a PC into a USB memory stick, the data then transferred into the box via its USB port.

By the way, Motors 240 is only viewable on boxes able to be connected into the internet.

Alistair Fyfe: What programme guide number does the indication of strength and quality refer to? e.g: 101, 102 etc. It would also be of assistance if the model number of the TV in question was known.

T.Smith-Rose: If, as indications would suggest, you are connected into a communal aerial system? then there little you can do that would help to alleviate the problem, and which I feel is (or might) be caused by reasons other than that connected with the engineering work being carried out at Winter Hill, as any power reductions found to be necessary is unlikely to be noticed by viewers located at only 8 miles away from the station, especially so if line-of-sight with the mast. (although in your case "just")

Its also noticed that the signal path from the transmitter has to pass through some rather tall trees at the rear of the building, tree leaves (especially if wet) being notorious for causing picture glitching, this also causing exacerbating potential problems caused by reception of a weaker signal.

Have you as yet ascertained if other residents are also experiencing problems with the reception of HD channels?

The other thing I wondered about being, viewing from Yates Fold, the the communal aerials mounted on the gable ends of the two apartment blocks appear to be pointing in slightly different directions, the one on the right block seemingly out of alignment (possibly blown) for reception from Winter Hill, has this been corrected in recent times?
