tony maynard: Which transmitter is your aerial pointing to? I looked on Streetview and saw some aerials on Crystal Palace and some on the Woolwich relay.
They are only about 30 degrees apart, but for Crystal Palace your aerial will be horizontal and for Woolwich it will be vertical. Woolwich only carries PSB channels.
Logical channel number 12 (Dave) is carried on COM5 and is therefore not broadcast by Woolwich, so if your aerial points to it, you must be receiving it from elsewhere: the likely answer is Crystal Palace, and this will be so for all COM channels (which carry ITV3, ITV4, Pick TV, Film4 etc).

Paul: Without a clue as to where you are, we are guessing. So I'll offer a guess: If you live in the Sutton-in-Ashfield/Clay Cross area you may find that Chesterfield transmitter is an issue as it is co-channel for on C29, but not co-channel on others.

Jean: Because it is scrambled and only available via satellite on Sky's subscription service.
You might be able to receive it on Freeview from Emley Moor.

S.Croman: I answer to your question: probably because your TV is tuning to Emley Moor transmitter which is in Yorkshire and serves a large portion of it.
You may be able to do the unplugging aerial trick, but only if we know which transmitter it is you are trying to pick up as in some cases the wanted and the unwanted could be within the same range of the frequency band.
I will hazard a guess that your aerial is horizontal and pointing north west, towards Winter Hill, which is roughly the same direction as Emley Moor.
In which case, when you run the automatic tuning scan, start it off with the aerial unplugged and plug in at 55% or once it gets past C47, if it gives UHF/RF channel numbers (which run 21 to 69) as it scans.
If you're looking to get Wales regional programming rather than North West England programming then it might require a bit more work, or you may find that it tunes in Wales instead.
You should be able to identify which transmitter you are tuned to by viewing the signal strength screen and observing the UHF/RF channel number.
For BBC One, Storeton Wales is on C57; Winter Hill is on C59; Emley Moor is on C47
For ITV, Storeton Wales is on C53; Winter Hill is on C59; Emley Moor is on C44
For BBC One HD, Storeton Wales is on C60; Winter Hill is on C54; Emley Moor is on C41
For ITV3, Winter Hill is on C58
For Pick TV Winter Hill is on C61
For Film4 Winter Hill is on C55
(On 10th April 2013, Winter Hill's BBC One will move to C50 and its Pick TV will move to C49.)
Because Storeton and Winter Hill are in roughly the same direction, you are probably looking at tuning in Storeton Wales for the Public Service channels (57, 53 and 60(HD)) and Winter Hill for the others. Because they're in the same area of channel numbers, you may have to resort to manual tuning if it doesn't default to Storeton Wales for the regional channels.

Roy Barton: As I say, I'm not a professional, but perhaps it might be worth checking that there isn't water/damp getting in.
The other possibility is that some vegetation has grown and is affecting your signal. Jamie's suggestion of looking at moving the aerial might be worth a try if that is what it is.

Paul: For Waltham you might need to have your former Group C/D aerial replaced. This would have been installed in the days of four-channel analogue.
Channel 29 is out of group whereas all the others are in-group.
There appear to be no C29 transmitters that might cause you difficulty.
What sort of strength and quality do you get on C29?
If you have manual tuning, go to it and select C29. Don't press the button to select/scan the channel; instead see if it gives an indication of strength and quality (give it several seconds to stabilise).

You will receive only those in PSB1, PSB2 and PSB3 tables. PSB3 is the HD one, so if you don't have a HD receiver, you will only get PSB1 and PSB2.

Ellie: Now that the power of the digital transmitter at Dover has been increased, at switchover, you may find that you can get away with a smaller aerial and/or shorter pole for Dover. A smaller aerial will have a lower wind-loading.

Dennis Phillips: You shouldn't just connect two cables under the same terminals.
If it has been bodged in this way, you may be able to correct it by installing taps at each point:
Television Aerial Boosters / Amplifiers, Splitters, Diplexers & Triplexers
I'm not a professional and have never done this; I've just read about it.
I suggest that you start by disconnecting the out-going "feed" from the first socket, so that you only have one socket connected to your aerial.

Mike: The bearings for the transmitters are:
Crystal Palace 36 degrees, aerial horizontal
Reigate 65 degrees, aerial vertical
There also appear to be a few horizontally-polarised aerials pointing to Heathfield which is at 123 degrees. The Streetview photos were taken before switchover, in March 2009. If I'm correct, number 22 and a few others may have found that PSB3, COM5 and COM6 are unavailable as they are co-channel with Dorking's.
