Channel 5 HD will launch on Freeview | Blogs

Stuart O.: Let's go thought those points.

First, there are plenty of places where BOTH S4C HD and Channel 4 HD can be received, so they have to separate channel numbers.

"But what is the point though in allocating channel numbers in threes?"

Two reasons. First that there can be two other versions of the channel on the following numbers, such as "+1" and "HD". Second, it means that the channel number don't end up having either even numbers (every 2 or 4), or "0" and "5" (every 4).

The gaps in the numbers are intended to be there, Sky didn't want the numbers to be allocated sequentially.

Radio stations, when they were moved to "0000" format numbers, were allocated in the order the channels launched.

trevorjharris: Film4 HD is not technically a "public service" channel, it is actually a profit-centre for the Channel 4 corporation, which is why it carried on Multiplex D/ArqB.

Channel 5 is, by the legal definition (the Broadcasting Acts and Communications Act 2003) a public service channel, which is why it has the "fifth" EPG slot. This is mainly because it carries a daily news service.

jacs: Yes, there are overnight tests at Crystal Palace last night and tonight. Do not retune your box, the channels will return when the tests are complete at 6am.

Martin Brown: Firstly, the TV Licence pay for the BBC alone, and you get all those services.

To be honest, you would be best advised to go for Freesat if you want more channels - see Compare Freeview Light and Freesat TV | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

ALAN PEACHEY: I think it might be odd that I have been running this site for the last decade and not know how to add channels to a satellite receiver...

Ian Davies: This is the sort of thing that happens with indoor aerials and why a rooftop aerial is strongly advised for stable Freeview reception. Please can you see Freeview reception has changed? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice ?

mst: Yes, at *most* masts the COM channels are lower levels and have lower coverage than for the PSBs. COMs do not have a "global coverage" requirement, the PSBs do.

Picture quality is not a function of signal strength, it is dependant on the bitrate allocated within the multiplex.

This change has NOT been communicated to the public AT ALL. I only know about it because I have non-public access to the information, coupled with the ability to scrape pages from the Digial UK site where you can see the changes if you know where to look (and you can spot the errors).

The changes will NOT happen to the PSB multiplexes, these are require to provide full coverage for 1000+ masts and the more robust mode is required for this.

Ofcom said it was OK for Arqiva to sell space on ArqB/ArqA coupled with pre-DSO-B during the period before the completion of switchover, and this was for more than just the two BT-owned "Sky Sports" slots.
