marie: The channels you mention (ArqA / ArqB) are on low power from Mendip until March 28th so you could well have slight problems with them until then, albeit that the reception predictor does not necessarily indicate as such.

There is though a possibility that you might be receiving these programmes from Wenvoe as its also indicated as good for your location, the only way to verify being to go into each in turn and check the signal strength showing, as there will also be a mux channel number seen associated with the reading, if Mendip ArqA is Ch67 (Pick TV - Dave etc) ArqB Ch52 (Film 4 - ITV4) whereas if the signal is from Wenvoe it will be ArqA Ch45 / ArqB Ch49.

If you find this has happened then only manual tuning in of these muxes (after having scrubbed everything stored) will get over the problem, recovering the remaining muxes using "add channels" or whatever it might be called on your set .

Its very difficult to say as regarding your aerial, as in some strong signal areas its possible to still see a picture with the aerial unplugged if the plug / cable is not that far away from the TV's aerial socket, so just out of interest can you get a picture with a short (about 600mm) piece of cable pushed into the aerial socket? making sure that the proper lead is well out of the way so as not to get signal transference.

Satellite reception is the most reliable of all with the signal being perfect 99.9% of the time, the only time not being during a very heavy thundery type rain storm, as what you say could suggest that you dish may require its alignment to be trimmed slightly, as its possibly a "fraction" out.

Connected my Humax to an old Sony TV and got a b and w picture so reconnected to a new Samsung TV which was fine. However my husband decided to try the Sony connection again and this time it played in colour. It has been happily playing in colour for 10 days until today when it has reverted to b and w again. I have checked all connections and turned the box on and off again to no avail. What can I do?

The default code on most of these devices seems to be 0000 (four zeros) or 1234, so if you haven't changed it since purchase one of those two might work.

davy: The 0000 code mentioned by Peter is the correct default code, so I cant see that you have any option but to carry out a "first time installation", as this is stated in the manual as the procedure to use when a lock code has been forgotten.

Diana: Excluding the possibility that the Sony is defective it could be that its scart socket pins are oxidised, so if you have a WD40 electrical cleaner aerosol about in the house give a quick squirt of this into the Sony's scart socket, as that can work wonders with contact type problems.

Can someone tell me why two of the groups of SAVINGS pages on page 2510 on THE BBC RED BUTTON text services (nationwide) are displaying nonesense and have been for the last two years on all BBC TV platforms FREEVIEW & FREESAT. When you complain they just try to fob you off by telling you that you are seeing things. The BBC gets more arrogant as the years go by and it's standards are falling year on year alo.

Barnet

We have a fairly modern TV with a built-in Freeview HD tuner, and have recently moved house from inner London to the northern outskirts covered by the New Barnet transmitter. Needless to say, we have noticed a considerable decline in services received. Whilst previously we enjoyed every Freeview channel we now only get a small number. Reception from multiplex C is fine, with multiplex D patchy at best. Reception from all other multiplexes is either very poor or non-existent.

We are in a purpose-built block of flats with a large number of satellite dishes lining the walls (presumably owned by the other inhabitants). Could this be compounding the problem?

Besides this, is there anything we can do to improve the situation pre-switchover i.e. consider inspecting the external (shared) aerial?

Thanks
Leon

Leon: If your aerial is on the New Barnet transmitter and you are receiving any Freeview channels, then they are not coming from New Barnet, and hence you are receiving signals from another direction and one to which your aerial doesn't point.

I had a look at your street on Google Streetview and the vast majority of aerials are on Crystal Palace. There are the tell tale signs that it is a bad signal area because of not only large aerials, but ones mounted high up.

Looking at the OS map, you are in High Barnet, so maybe you are just high enough.

I don't think that the satellite dishes will have an adverse effect on the terrestrial signal. They have probably been installed in such numbers due to the lack of Freeview.

Personally, I would leave the aerial as it is until switchover. You could make a change when the current aerial will work just fine after switchover. Or you could change it and find that it doesn't work properly after switchover.

If you get one good multiplex, then you're lucky and it might be a sign that a ten-fold increase in the power of the signal at switchover will see you getting them all.
