Channel One to close, Challenge to come to Freeview
Sky is closing one pay and one free channel from the portfolio it bought from Virgin TV, because they match channels already provided by Sky.
Bravo and Channel One (which was Virgin 1 and before that FTN) will close.
This means that the Channel One slot on Freeview will be replaced with the quiz show channel Challenge.
Challenge is now in the Freeview guide on 46. If you can't see it yet, please follow these instructions on your set-top box or Freeview TV: My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong - ukfree.tv.

Yeah i know that but they didn't own ABC1 then Virgin 1, but that didn't stop them plotting to buy out and cancel them.

Briantist: Challenge was not on Freeview until today, it is a replacement for Channel One. Therefore it isn't a reduction in the number of channels provided. 27,329 posts
Oops, sorry! I must have not noticed the word "Freeview" hidden away in there. So yep its the same for Freeview, but a reduction for me as I already had Challenge in my Virgin Media package - and I am not remotely interested in it!
Channel One was a good channel that I frequently watched - Star Treks (I watched the last Voyager episode last night), Motorway Patrol etc.
Even worse for me - I had absolutely NO IDEA it was going until I switched on the tv today :-(
I hadn't seen any advertising for it, don't know how I missed it - they must have shown something on the channel about it, there was enough blurb on there when it was about to change its name from Virgin1.

The only way to effect change is for all sky customers to not renew their packages, but as we all know they appeal to the lowest common denominator, sport. I quit sky some years ago now because other than sport, there are very few programmes that I that are not either repeats or low grade american series. Such is the free market economy.

You argue rightly that sky is within it's rights to buy tv channels in order to make money for it's shareholders - no one can dispute this it is simply good business. However I thought that there is surely a case for ofcom and the competion comission to look at the growing influence that sky has in this market (however the government would not accept the recommendation as per proposed news corp deal where they have given sky time to find a compromise i.e. sell off loss making sky news)
2 points - why can sky not be made to provide the same diversity of programs for FTA channels as bbc, itv etc have to provide.
Also Dave channel was threatened a couple of years back pre red dwarf easter special for not providinbg original programming - surely a channel dedicated to repeating game shows cannot be providing original programs.

Hi all,
I just want to take a min to defend briantist, he runs this site to promote free tv & the facts that he states are simply just the way it is, he, you & I may not like or agree with it but it is still the way it is.
Lets not shoot the messenger !
The best way you can fight this is not to subscribe to the services sold by those who deny you access to the programs that you used to watch for free & encourage your friends & family to do the same.

Briantist: Sky are like the Ferengi in that they are out to make as much money as possible and do not care about who they hurt in the process at least the Ferengi are fun and often get put back in their place, unlike Sky. They are also like the Borg in that they take things over and not for the better unless it is for themselves. But like the Ferengi, the Borg get put back in their place.
Where is Captain Janeway when we need her. She has been booted off freeview with the unfair demise of C1
