Channel 5 takes Freeview HD slot - Broadband TV News

"Channel 5 has been granted permission by Ofcom to launch its high definition channel on Freeview HD."

Channel 5 was the sole bidder for the fifth space on the "Freeview HD", BBCB multiplex, with a proposal to provide a full-time simulcast of the Channel 5 service in high definition.

Channel 5 will join BBC One HD, ITV1 HD (STV HD in Scotland, UTV HD in Northern Ireland in 2012), Channel 4 HD (or S4C HD in Wales) and BBC HD on the Freeview HD service.

Shortly BBC HD will be replaced by BBC TWO (England) HD.

It is not clear at this point if Channel 5 HD will also go on Freesat at the same time.

More soon.

trevorjharris: Film4 HD is not technically a "public service" channel, it is actually a profit-centre for the Channel 4 corporation, which is why it carried on Multiplex D/ArqB.

Channel 5 is, by the legal definition (the Broadcasting Acts and Communications Act 2003) a public service channel, which is why it has the "fifth" EPG slot. This is mainly because it carries a daily news service.

paul jordan: I understand that the official position is that Channel 5 is still in financial negotiations with BBC (as they operate the BBCB multiplex) for the costs of carriage.

It might be good for Christmas Freeview HD box/set sales if Channel 5 was added very soon.

Anyone thinking of buying a Freeview HD TV (and maybe PVR) should ask if the channel numbers can be sorted to personal taste.

It's one of the reasons we went for Sonys. Having BBC HD on button 8 is great.

Whenever I use SkyHD and Freesat HD (or a DVB-T2 box) I'm reminded what a pain it to plough through the confusion of jumbled channels.

Bravo Bravia.

Peter, I'm 50 and fed up with all the trash for young people. I wish the BBC had an arcive channel showing their shows from the 60s and 70s etc. Z cars, Softly Softly and so on. Just think what people have missed! TV is not all X Factor.

I forgot to say, HD should be the norm now so lets hope the Freeview EPG will have the 5 HD channels slots 1,2,3,4&5!

Iain Davies: Basically, not a chance.

As I covered in ITV1+1, ITV1HD, BBC One HD regional services on Freeview | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice the HD services do not have regions.

BBC One HD is a "national" service, not the 15 regions in SD. Which BBC regions are on satellite? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

BBC TWO HD will be the "England" service, not the 4 nations in SD.

ITV1 HD has four regions at the moment in HD, not even all the advertister regions, and not all the "classic" news regions.

Channel 4 HD doesn't have it's six ad regions - Macro Map | Interactive Map of Our Regions with Data .

Channel 5 HD would need it's four ad regions too - Macro Map | Interactive Map of Our Regions with Data .

That would be a great channel if it was possible but alas so many of the great shows from back then would now be classed as not PC & so it be a waste of time
