My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Do Sky have a problem with HD Box ? I have noticed that when we have an ambient temperature over about 27C my box cuts out and a " No signal report " comes up. Perhaps the circuit contains a component which has a thermal overload cut out, which Sky are not ware of ? When I place a fan to blow air over the box the signal returns after a few minutes. Your comments will be appreciated. Thanks & regards.

Maurice Rowley: It depends on what brand of Sky HD box that you have? as Thomson HD and Sky+ boxes are notorious for power supply problems of exactly the nature you have described.

Although in general terms the power units fitted into most Sky boxes do not take kindly to operating in excessively hot environments as they are inclined to run on the warm side at the best of times, this causing the electrolytic capacitors to dry out which results in a low voltage being supplied to the tuner, this on many occasions dropping out resulting in the "no signal" warnings to be seen.

Regarding the component at fault, if the box starts to operate again on being cooled down then its likely to be the voltage regulator IC, possibly (but not guaranteed to be) by it not being bolted sufficiently tight enough onto its heatsink.

Is it common that every time we have a heavy storm/rain my satellite signal disappears but seems to return shortly after the rain stops. Once it has gone i cannot restore it until the storm passes, it could and has gone on for a long time. Any suggestions tks

kind regards Les

Les Ebbage: Heavy thundery type downpours will always affect satellite reception, however weather conditions such as described will always affect reception much sooner if the dish is less than being perfectly aligned, and so you should carry out a signal strength / quality check to see what the levels are indicating.

If you are using a standard Sky box press "services" - 4 -6 and check what the signal strength / quality levels are showing as, if less then 60% (equivalent of) then the dish requires slight realigning, this usually in
the horizontal plane, left to right.

If you have a Sky+ box then press "services" and you will then see the main menu with "options" being highlighted, highlight the "settings" menu using the right arrow button and press select, then using the left /right arrow buttons scroll to "signal" and press select, this will then display the signal level indicator bars.

If however you are using a Freesat box then its not really possible to advise on the procedure to use, as Freesat boxes all use different procedures for signal checking.

The point to note being, that the signal quality should always be the same as or more than the strength with both at least 60%, if it isn't then the dish requires its alignment to be trimmed.

Bob Peacock: The only thing that can cause that to happen is either that the multi room box has developed a fault or its the coax feed to it, or maybe even this particular outlet port on the dishes LNB has developed a fault.

Of course you can soon eliminate the possibility of the coax cable being faulty if you try the main box in it position.
