My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Scott: Also meant to say, that although its unlikely that this will apply when its only one TV that's affected, but if nothing you try makes any difference then see if anything changes by removing the normal aerial that's connected into the Sky box, if by any chance that cures the problem then you will require to change the RF output channel used on the Sky box, unable to recommend a suitable channel as you haven't provided your post code, or at least one from near by.

e groves: Depending on where your aerial is situated? your box could well be suffering from being severely overloaded by the fact of the Divis transmitter being located at less than two miles away.

Try a test using a set top aerial or a short piece of wire of about a couple of feet or so connected into your boxes aerial socket, this followed by carrying out an auto-scan.

Scott: Any channel in the ranges from 61 - 69.

And just in case you are not aware of the procedure, press: Services - 4 then 0 - 1 - select and you will see RF outlets (4) on the list. (on Standard Sky box)

jb38: tried everything you mentioned still no good, ive checked the connecters on both ends of the cable going from amp to bedroom with no signal and they fine, am i right in say it couldnt be the cable due to the freeview and other analogue coming through ? i also tried putting cable into tv without magic eye but no diffrent.. im now thinking its the tv set as this one is new and not the one used before

Scott: Well, what I would be inclined to do now is to take the offending TV and position it near to the Sky box and couple it into same's RF2 via the magic eye and see what results you get by doing that, because if by any chance its OK then you will need to investigate the coax link from the Global amp / distribution box as the problem must be connected with that.

This is said based on the fact that if you have altered the Sky boxes RF2 output channel and rescanned the TV whilst in analogue mode to pick up the Sky boxes new output channel, then that eliminates the possibility of the TV's analogue tuner being defective on that particular channel.

Of course if it was easier to arrange, you could also just try the offending set on the aerial used by the other TV, as that would soon show if the TV was OK or not.
