To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Steve Donaldson: I read your earlier comment and it alerted me to re-check what had occurred on Wednesday.

There were quite a number of relocations and I hadn't noticed GREAT! tv +1 was one of them.

I looked at the thread you linked to and noticed some are accusing BBC channels as being the cause.

I have no doubt that the slashless CRIDs off GREAT! tv +1 are the cause.

Interestingly, the above-mentioned fault on D3&4 means that, unlike BBCA, there is no EIT for GREAT! tv +1 off that multiplex, so it would be safe for those users with susceptible devices.

Ironically, the EIT schedule for GREAT! tv +1 bears little, if any, relation to what is broadcast.

Giselle:

As you haven't given a full postcode or said which transmitter your aerial is pointing at, depending or your location there could be one of 4 transmitters you might receive.
IF your aerial it pointing at the Tay Bridge transmitter (it would have its rods vertical) then that one is subject to Planned Engineering.

Good afternoon,
I've moved house and live down by the river. The large aerial in the loft doesn't pick up a signal. I plugged a round metal aerial the old fashioned ones in the back of the tv. With perseverance I managed to get 160 Freeview channels. However, only a few worked then kept dipping out.
The transmitter mast is about 5 miles away.
No other houses on the development have outside aerials, some have the Sky type dishes.
I was thinking to buy a flat stick on the wall aerial.
Any thoughts or recommendations in getting Freeview.
Many thanks,
Jeni

Jeni Spyby:

First, a flat "stick on the wall" aerial is a total waste of money. You live in a VERY awkward spot (assuming that it's the general Waterside Lane area) and if a good loft aerial doesn't get adequate signal then a stick on the wall one certainly won't - they don't have the gain or proper directional; properties needed.

A particular problem at present is current weather conditions which could be why you are seeing variable results and I'm afraid there is absolutely nothing you can do about that!
"Tropospheric Ducting" which sometimes comes with High Pressure weather systems, causes signals from distant transmitters to travel a lot further than normal, and you can get interference from Continental and UK transmitters. Currently parts of the East/South East could be affected.
Both the BBC and Freeview have issued general warnings about variable short term disruption to reception which could affect various parts of the UK.

I'm assuming that the property is a fairly new development and some of the reception "predictors" give "variable" results, some suggesting only a signal from an East Anglia transmitter (to the NNE compass direction).is possible, whilst others suggest Bluebell Hill, Gillingham Test Centre and Crystal Palace are possibilities. However the East Anglia transmitter predictions are worse than the others!

Your loft aerial needs to be pointing correctly with its rods (or squashed Xs) horizontal. Bluebell Hill is roughly SSW whereas Gillingham test Centre is roughly slightly S of SSE. The aerial needs to be positioned so that it is not pointing through water tanks, metal objects, solar panels, very thick walls etc. You could also "try" pointing it due S which may enable you to get signals from either transmitter. Steve has given you a very good technical response to your other post here Get to see your Freeview predictions map | free and easy for 21 years

In addition to reception problems currently caused by weather conditions, you may also suffer interference from new/upgraded mobile phone masts (your area should have received postcards).
Your aerial needs to be a Group K to cover the range of UHF channels used, although a Group T/Wideband would work it can also readily receive the mobile signals whereas the Group K will reduce the interference. You can also get a Free Filter from https://restoretv.uk/ give them a call on 0808-1313-800 or email them via the Contact Us page and request a free filter.

In present conditions you may have to keep trying to get an adequate signal by manual tuning (as per Steve's reply). IF when things settle down (you have a filter and weather conditions change) and you still can't get an adequate signal then you might like to consider FreeSat. This is subscription free just like Freeview. A lot of modern TV sets have a satellite tuner built-in so all you need is a Dish and LNB (and connecting cable).

Jeni Spyby: One possible reason for getting no signal from the loft aerial is if there is a signal amplifier/booster fitted which is not being fed with power.

If there is an amplifier in the loft, at the end of the cable where the aerial is, then this may be the type which requires a power supply at the other end of the aerial cable where the TV is. Such a power supply may itself look like a booster. It is a small box with an electrical flexible cable and a 3-pin plug on, an aerial cable coming down from the aerial and another lead connecting it to the TV. A signal booster without power will give nothing out, even if there is a signal going in.

I think we must assume that that the aerial is there, it worked previously. If there is what looks like a signal amplifier, then knowledge of its make and model would allow further guidance. Similarly, if the aerial has any identifying make and model name/number, then that may also be helpful.
