Don: Al Jazeera Eng is on 11082H.

11082H is the weakest transponder used by Freesat.

The slightest bit of rain might be enough to reduce the S/N ratio below that required.

About 6dB S/N is needed. I get 7dB S/N, here in Salford, on a clear day.

The strongest transponder is 10964H, which carries Channel 5, with 15.9dB S/N.

Here are the Freesat services carried on 11082H:

11082.25 H 22000 5/6 DVB-S QPSK:

js,

Thanks for the reply; makes sense now, years ago ( in the Army ) we used to have problems with 'rain fade' at UHF frequencies; also, ( I noticed later), Bloomberg was falling out the same time as Al Jazeera ! Where do you get all this info ?

Don.

Don:

The effect of moisture in the atmosphere has been well known in technical circles for many years. In the early days of Astra satellite transmissions (around 1989) it was a problem serious enough to recommend larger dishes to minimise the loss of reception due to rain or fog/mist. It was also a known problem with UHF TV reception, especially in 'fringe' areas where the signal strength was poor.

Many RF transmissions are susceptible to the effects of moisture in the atmosphere, not just TV signals.

Don: If news is your thing, it might be best to scan the channels in non-Freesat mode.

These Free-To-Air HD news channels ought to be on Freesat but aren't:

11509V 23000 8PSK DVB-S2 2/3
TRT World HD

11612H 23000 8PSK DVB-S2 2/3
Al Jazeera HD

11686V 23000 8PSK DVB-S2 2/3
Bloomberg HD

11671H 22000 QPSK DVB-S 5/6
CNN HD

You can find out what's where, here: Astra 2E / Astra 2F / Astra 2G (28.2

I am in Richmond Surrey and received Al Jazeera from Crystal Palace multiplex Com 7 until about 24/3/18, then it vanished along with several other HDs (106 to 110) from the C35 multiplex. I tried the C33 but signal and quality are both zero. Has there been a change in the type of aerial required??

GAR: The COM7 & COM8 multiplexes moved to UHF channels 55 & 56 on 21st March at Crystal Palace. If you can't restore the missing channels by manual tuning then you most likely have a Group A aerial which is not designed to receive frequencies in the upper part of the UHF band. If you don't have satellite or cable you may be eligible for a free replacement wideband aerial which can be arranged by contacting the Freeview Advice Line (see link below).

StevensOnln1: Tried CH 55 and 56 - no signal. My aerial looks like an old standard Yagi. I had noticed somewhere that Al Jazeera was now a wide band but no clear explanation. Freeview has now agreed to replace the aerial at no cost in a week.

Many thanks, George

Gar:

Al Jazeera is simply a channel included in a multiplex broadcast on either channel 55 or 56. It is not the channel that is wideband but the aerial is required to be a wideband type as those channels are way outside the range your existing aerial was designed to receive. Hence the need to change the aerial, which has been agreed by Freeview.
