To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:
Try this:
1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;
2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;
3) wait 30 seconds;
4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;
5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;
6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;
7) do a complete scan for channels again.
The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Roger F C Alban: Further to my earlier comments on the previous page, if the TV aerial feeds via a set-top box (i.e. the aerial cable comes in and goes into the set-top box then out and into the TV) try feeding it directly into the TV.
If the aerial cable has one end plugged into the wall and the other into the TV or set-top box, swap with another lead if you have a spare. Swap things where you can to prove or disprove them to be at fault.

Chris.SE thank you for your reply. Apologies that it's taken me so long to reciprocate.
I have checked the transmitters and I should be receiving signal from Sutton Coldfield - which is the is in the direction of the aerial. We have only moved into the house a few weeks ago, and this is all we have known and haven't changed anything.
It is an external area but as we moved not that long ago, I don't know how old it is, and I'm not sure how old the coax cable I'm using is. Maybe about 5 years old, but it has no damage. I get beuse a splitter between the box and the coax, because if I don't then I receive no channels/signal into the box at all.
The lead I'm using between the aerial socket to the box is a 3c-2v 75 OHM cable, and no I don't have another cable to swap out and check. But like I say, it works fine directly into the tv, it stops working when it is plugged into the box.
I haven't received any restoretv postcard, and there is a HDMI lead out of the same box the coax is going into but it isn't particularly close. Again, the HDMI lead is not too far away when the cox is plugged directly into the TV.
In terms of signal strength, they are about 70-80% with quality of about 60-65% for ITV1. 75-80% strength and 60-65% quality for the remaining channels in the multiplex.
Any insight would be most helpful. Thank you.

Steve Donaldson:
It should be remembered that Mendip is currently listed for Planned Engineering (and has been for a couple of weeks IIRC but can't confirm precisely atm as I don't currently have access to my notes).
This could well be the cause of current issues but nevertheless it would still be wise to carry out the checks advised.

Doug:
Those signal quality figures indicate that there is a significant issue, they should be 100% virtually all the time. Signal strength figures of those values should be ok IF there aren't local sources of strong interference and there are no other problems with the aerial, it's cable or connections between the aerial and the set/box.
I'm afraid the code for that cable you use to connect to the TV is indicative of it being a typical cheap poorly screened lead and any HDMI lead(s) should be kept as far from the coax leads as possible.
When I mentioned the aerial and coax in my previous response, I was specifically referring to the coax from the aerial to the aerial socket. Does it run externally, can you follow it from the aerial and make sure it doesn't go through any other boxes/splitters/amps etc.? Does this coax have any part markings?
If you've only recently moved to the house the previous owner may have had a card from restoretv.uk but as you haven't given a full postcode I can't check if your area should have had one or how good a signal you should be getting.

Thanks Chris.SE
I've brought a more expensive coax cable which seems to have admittedly somewhat unexpectedly solved the problem. But that's a good position to be in. Hopefully it stays fixed.
Thanks again!

Doug:
If the Quality figures have returned to 100% then it's quite probable that it's fixed. If not, there is still an issue.

Chris.SE: Regarding the long-standing Invalid Character Codes issue, there is a nice one on God TV at the moment:
God TV, Thu 27 Jul 04:00 - 04:30: Today with J John
Canon J.John of the Philo Trust infuses faith, hope and love into each broadcast - a real Faith Lift. Today he speaks with John Lawson, author of {L'}If a Wicked Man', who found true freedom behind bars.
Here we have in the description the duff byte 0x18, this being the low byte of the intended unicode character, "LEFT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK" (U + 2018), which I have indicated by {L'}
The quoted part, {L'}If a Wicked Man', closes with an ordinary apostrophe instead of the usual duff byte 0x19 for "RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK" (U + 2019)
Looking at this event on my LG telly, the duff byte is simply ignored and we are left with an item with a closing quote but no opening quote.
