Briantist: I don't know if you are interested in an article in the Daily Mail online. It's about a ruling on satellite dishes from a European Court. Having a satellite dish 'is a human right,' says European court

I've long been a 'receiver' of this email news letter, thank you, but have always been utterly frustrated by the false information being given by the maps for postcode BH22 8SE. This persists in alleging that we get our signals from some unknown foreign territory called Salisbury. I can assure all that NO-ONE in BH22 8SE has ever received any transmission from Salisbury - BH22 8SE is served very well from the Isle of Wight. My question for all is; will this fallicy continues after the alleged future up-grade to HD next year?

NigelD: Depends if Brian ever gets the real radiation patterns out of the broadcasters, gets better terrain data, and updates his prediction system accordingly.
Digital UK's predictor, which does have that information, does not show Salisbury as a possibility.
Looking at photos of the Salisbury tower, it doesn't look like any new transmitting aerials were added for low-power digital, suggesting that the radiation pattern is still that of the analogue cylinder fitted in 1968: BBC RD - Publications - R&D Report 1968-22 : Salisbury UHF relay station: Summary of installation . This transmitted very little power in your direction, about 1/10th of maximum, though the current antenna shroud looks very clean for a 40-year-old installation. Pictures at mb21 - The Transmission Gallery .
There was also a fairly pronounced vertical beam tilt of 1.5°, to limit range to a few kilometres.
The Poole and Cheselbourne relays use the same frequencies as Salisbury analogue, before and after switchover, so Salisbury had better not transmit much signal in your direction!

J k can you get a digital box from the goverment through the digital switchover these boxs can be used without a scart but i have seen a lit of these boxs only last about 14 months and give up the ghost. There are other boxs out there what you need is a box with an rf modulator this will let you tune into a crt tv without a scart. Hope this helps

j k rawlings: You can use an "RF modulator" such as this one -
Programmable Universal Modulator : AV Accessories : Maplin
- with any Freeview or Freesat box of your choice.

I was asked by a friend in the Belmont area a few days ago the following question:I have a full HD TV but no HD tuner. I am not buying an HD Freeview tuner at the moment, so will I be able to watch the four HD channels in SD after 17th August, or will there be no signal when I click on them? I couldn't give a certain answer. Could you?

Michael: If you do not have a Freeview HD (DVB-T2) receiver, your box will not even recognise there is a broadcast.
The transmissions are in a mode (256QAM) a standard receiver does not implement and the channels are encoded in MPEG4, which cannot be decoded using a receiver with the older MPEG4 standard.

NottsUK: Thanks for the Daily Mail link, I put it in the Newsbucket whilst ignoring that fact that we don't elect judges in the UK either.
I have also posted up New Astra 1N satellite to offer more UK-focused capacity - and soon | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .
