To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Ronald J. Beaton: What is this "4G" aerial you speak of. "4G" implies mobile telephony, so it's not surprising that using a mobile telephone antenna for television reception is likely to result in poor reception.

Knowledge of your location, preferably in the form of postcode or that of a nearby shop, is required as this is a reception issue.

If the "4G" aerial is really intended for television reception then you describe it as "flat", but Rosneath broadcasts vertically so that might be one reason that reception is likely to be intermittent.

Ronald J. Beaton: My apologies, Rosneath broadcasts a low power signal horizontally in the direction of Rosneath town and a high power vertically polarised one in the other direction.

Ronald J. Beaton : Indoor aerials no matter of what the brand might be are seldom ever satisfactory, as all of them are vulnerable to fluctuations in output caused by them reacting to the capacitive effects of movements within the room, or even movements in adjoining rooms whether or not within the same property, fluctuations in output levels showing up in a more severe fashion in aerials advertised as being fitted with a built in high gain amplifier, hence why aerials of the latter year variety can sometimes perform better.

Purely out of curiosity, what like is the reception on your main TV if you try swapping the two indoor aerials over? as another aspect about these high gain indoor aerials is that some of the gain is achieved by designing the aerial to have a narrow pick up angle, needless to say this making them even more vulnerable to movements within the room, or indeed even in the angle the signal is being received at.

However as far as the 4G aspect is concerned, although these aerials do have a built in filter to attenuate reception above C60, the area used by 4G transmitters, there is an element of this aspect being used as a sales gimmick by some aerial manufacturers in a similar way as during switchover from analogue to digital aerials were seen advertised as being for "digital" reception, or even "digital compatible", when in actual fact all aerials are, aerials being capable of receiving signals of any mode provided that the transmission is at a frequency within the range that the aerial is designed to operate on.

m.whitbrook: David Lindsay pointed out on the 12th January that you very close to the transmitter, hence your problem is almost certainly to do with too high a signal. You need to sort that out, which is easy to do.

Sat. dishes are unlikely to have an effect on your Freeview reception at all.

m.whitbrook: The summer months tend to have tress in leaf, the winter does not, which might explain why the problem is worse in winter.

If you'd simply follow the advice on the page 'too much of a good thing', you dont need to pay anyone. You just need an attentuator to kill the signal a bit, which cost less than two pounds each on Amazon.

My freeview box wont switch on. The power light is still there, but also have noticed that the other light is on too in red, it was working perfectly last night. I have powered down and unplugged all connections and reconnected but still the same problem. When I press the remote power button all it does to the box if flicker, have changed the batteries too, but still not coming on.

yvonne cooper: Without knowledge of which brand model of Freeview box you are referring to, however nomatter which brand it might happen to be, the symptoms as described are suggestive of its operating system having failed, the fact of you having said that its already been powered down and disconnected from the mains (the ultimate test) and yet it still does not respond to commands, in most cases (especially so in lower priced devices) being an indication that the device is beyond repair.

It wouldnt do any harm to try powering it down again, but leaving it disconnected from the mains for about an hour or so to let its components thoroughly cool down.
