Hello,
For many months now I have not been able to get Fiver, Five USA or Virgin One on my Humax Digital Television. I used to be able to. I miss my Sunday CSI fix! Obviously I have rescanned numerous times but it doesn't make a difference. When I look at the details it says the signal is strong but quality is poor, under 10%. If anyone has any bright ideas I'd be grateful.

David: 5* and 5 USA are encrypted and require at least a 'Freesat from Sky' viewing card. If you have a Sky subscription and they don't appear in the EPG it may be that they're not available in Ireland.
You can try using Add Channels, but it probably won't work. Still, the details you need are: 12422 MHz, H polarization, 27500 baud FEC 2/3, and the stream IDs are 7710 (5 USA), 7711 (5 USA +1), 7715 (5*) and 7716 (5* +1).

I re-tuned my Freeview box (not Freeview plus) to get BBC Alba - but 5 USA and 5* have disappeared. I have re-tuned several times using automatic and manual search but they haven't tuned in.
Anyone help? CSI was my main viewing.

I've tried everything I can think of to reenable it, but no luck so far
has it been struck off for some reason due to the impending transfers?

Last Friday and today you advertised that you would be screening the western film "Monte Walsh" starring Lee Marvin and Jack Palance.On both occasions the actual film shown was one starring Tom Sellick which was made much later than the Lee marvin version. This observation is posted in particular to Mr D Roberts who wrote on 13 March 2011.
The announcer is NOT inaudible on my TV. In fact when a programme has finished it is quite the reverse and he can be heard out on the street where I live he is so loud. It is quite disconcerting.
Perhaps I've got all your volume Mr Roberts and you've got none of mine. It would be good is 5 USA would do something to rectify this problem.

John D: The multiplex carrying these channels is temporarily on low power, until 27 June. (It's actually higher than it was before switchover started, but only 10% of the power level of the other channels.) That's because it hasn't yet moved to its final frequency. I'd expect the problem to be fixed when it moves to C42 on the 27th.
These problems usually occur when a receiver is desensitised by a strong signal on an adjacent channel. If you have a booster or other amplifier, try removing it. If not, or if that doesn't help, consider adding an attenuator.

I have a digital tuner in my Panasonic VHS DVD combi recorder and my Sony Bravia TV can get channel 31 5USA and show it on the TV however when I set the recorder for C5USA although it shows it is recording when I try the play back it shows a blank screen with a white bar across it at the bottom and the words 5USA No Signal. Any ideas what I am doing wrong as it shows on the Bravia TV.
I triedan auto install of the channels on the recorder and the TV and both showed there was a channel 31 present but the recorder wont record 5USA.

This site is just a forum where people who are having problems can ask for help but if you don't say how you are trying to watch 5USA its difficult to focus on what your problem might be. You don't say how netflix pesters you - is it emails or pop up ads or what? Again if you don't say no one can help.

W: 5 USA (31) is perfectly OK with me, if this problem has just occurred then try switching the TV or box completely off (at the mains) and then after a short pause back on again.
By the way, 5USA (31) is on the same transmitter as ITV3 (10) / Drama (20) etc.

Hi, not sure if anyone can help me but would appreciate any suggestions.
I can't seem to get the SDN MUX channels on my tv, this includes 5*, Five USA and Drama among others. I have tried switching off and re-tuning and also doing a first time installation. I live in a flat so am unable to get to the aeriel. My local transmitter is Waltham and when I look on the coverage checker I should be getting these channels.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Emily: Advice on difficulties with reception cannot really be given in cases where a persons location is unknown, this preferably given in the form of a post code or one from somewhere nearby, e.g: a shop / Post Office, however as the programme channels mentioned are all on the SDN transmitter you should go into your TV or boxes tuning menu / manual tune then enter and scan C29.
By the way, on most equipment the level that a signal is being received at can be checked "before" actually scanning it by pausing after entering the mux channel number required, as even although a signal level might be seen in some instances its possibly sitting at a level under that required for the receiver to capture and store it.
It should also be noted that as engineering work is being carried out at the Waltham transmitter breaks in transmission or alternatively periods of reduced power can be expected to occur at any time.

I haven't had the channels at all since moving in almost a year and a half ago.

Emily: Can you view the following programme channels: (11) Pick TV - (24) ITV4? because if you can then there is no logical reason for not being able to view the SDN mux on C29, that is unless a fault exists on the communal distribution system as your C29 manual tune test should have resulted in a signal of sorts.
If you are on friendly terms with any of the other flat dwellers you should try and find out if they are able to receive Drama / ITV3 etc, because if not then this would save you from needlessly carrying out tests on your own system.
By the way, no engineering work is being carried out at Waltham this week and the station is fully operational.

Emily: Most (but not all) properties in the category of being classed as a flat are fitted with TV sockets fed from a multi-output distribution amplifier with its input being connected into one single aerial, this arrangement being called a communal aerial system and which I assumed possibly applied to yourself by you having mentioned that you reside in a flat.
However, if this isn't the case then its still advisable to make an enquiry with a neighbour, because "if" you carried out the manual tune signal checking procedure exactly as described in my original reply (i.e: enter channel number but do not scan) this should have indicated that a signal was being received albeit with it possibly being too low for your TV's receiver to capture, and with "dependant on how low" with the easiest (and less costly) way of getting over the problem being by using a signal booster.
You can check if this procedure works on whatever you are using (as it doesn't on some devices) by entering Waltham's BBC mux on C49 or its ArqA mux on C56 as used by Pick TV / Dave / Sky news etc.

I'm not sure whether we have separate aerials or a communal one as it is a block of only 6 flats. My landlady is coming over for a different problem tomorrow so I will try and find out.
As for the scan I'm not sure I did it correctly, I think I did but I'm not very technical so I'm not sure! I'll tell you what I did:
1. Went on "TV Menu" (when on BBC1)
2. Went on "DTV Manual Tuning"
3. On here it says "UHF CH 49" at the top and says "good signal" in the little box. It says the same when I flick over to "UHF CH 56" I think this might be the MUXes? If I go to "UHF CH 29" and scan it doesn't do anything - says no signal. But looking at it now I don't think I'm doing the right thing!

We are having problems receiving 5 USA 5* and ITV3. This has been over the last couple of months. Also for at least the last month we have had to re-scan ALL channels every morning. We wrongly assumed everything would resolve with the new channels added/swopped around as at yesterday's date but no - problem still exists. We have a booster which improved things slightly. We are informed that we have 3 different areas we can pick up signals from - our P/C is PL26 8XJ. We have an outside and an internal loft aerial, when plugging into the external aerial we lose all BBC channels! We have checked on the internet that informs us there is no signal problem from any of the 3 sites. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could ask them, but to be honest it is an awkward time for the 5 group of channels to be picking up shows as Viacom (who own 5) are about to do some pretty major changes to their channels. Viacom are going to stop broadcasting the channel VIVA on Freeview and replace it with Spike.
Also, I have to say that 5 have a pretty lousy record with broadcasting US imports. Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Parenthood, Archer, Once Upon A Time and Helix are all US shows that 5, 5* or 5USA started broadcasting and then they either dropped, shuffled around the schedules or switched channels.

Hi,
Don't know whether this is within your control,but I was baffled by 5USA not showing the final episode of Series 6.We all know the ending, but why show all 21previous episodes and not the last!Analogies are too obvious to make.
There was a screw-up with episode 20 following the 17th,but 5USA went back and showed 18,19 and repeated 20 before 21,so the running order was back.Then nothing!??!
It seemed and is illogical.

Ralph harvey: Logical channel number 21 was VIVA, this having moved to 74. 5USA was on 31, so if you still have VIVA on 21 then you can't have done a retune to reorganise the channels as per the new numbering and 5USA may therefore be still on 31.

I've just watched The Mysteries of Laura on 5USA, series 2 episode 1 broadcast at 9pm tonight.
Why oh why did an unwanted voice barge in 51 minutes into the recording, when the programme didn't end until 58 minutes, talking all over the dialogue to tell us what was going to be on next!
Totally unnecessary and extremely irritating.
Please could somebody stop it from happening again?

Mariablanca Perezaguilar: Having watched every single episode of SVU myself, I'm guessing that they 99.9% of them can't be shown before the watershed (9pm). This is also true for them when they are first broadcast on US TV. Why not get yourself a Freeview+ and record them so you can watch them whenever you want?

Have recently watched, and thoroughly enjoyed, the Jesse Stone series.It is a likeable show ticking all the boxes for acting,script,directing and music.
Although each episode has a stand alone storyline, there is a timeline of continuity in the series.
So I wondered why 5 USA disregarded this and broadcast them outwith the chronological order?

You would be better asking 5USA directly as this website is totally incependent off all broadcasters and is intended primarily to assist with reception problems.

We are having trouble with the 5USA picture on our Sony tv showing "blocks" (which look like interference) on
the screen. This is also happening on the other channels in the COM4/SDN Multiplex.
All the channels on the other multiplexes are fine.
However when we plug our other tv into the same aerial the picture is fine on all the channels.
Hence the problem appears to be with the Sony tv not working with just that set of channels.
The firmware is at the latest level so there is nothing else that we can obviously do.
Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem ?

Barry Elkington: What signal strength and quality readings do you get when viewing 5USA and what do you get on other channels such as Pick (channel 11) or Dave (channel 12)?

Signal Strength is High for all channels.
Signal quality is:
- Low/ sometimes Good for 5USA and other channels in that Mux
- Good / sometimes Low for Pick and other channels in that Mux
- High for BBC1, BBC2, ITV, etc.

You need a sigfnal strength of between 60% and 85% but no more and noless. If it is higher than 85% then you will get problems of pictures breaking and sound being unreliable. Check what values you TV reports and if they are higher than 85% then look at "Too much of a good thing" on this website.

MikeP: The signal strength isn't given as a number, just a horizontal bar which shows Low, Good or High.
The poor reception seems to be related to the weather. i.e. some days there isn't a problem.
However the real question is why, when plugged into the same aerial, one tv set has no problems with this group of channels whilst the Sony one does.

Barry: check the aerial lead - if its damaged, then that can cause problems with certain muxes. They are very cheap to replace, so its an easy check.
A Sony TV will tend to have a fairly sensitive tuner, albeit one which is really robust with a high signal strength. So its possible that one set is just at the threshold of having a problem, whereas another is just below it.

As MikeB intimates, different TV sets have tuners that vary in sensitivity. Sony tend to be quite sensitive and hence susceptible to overload if the signal is too strong. So that will be more affected by too much signal rather than the other set which is less sensitive.
On your strength bars, you want to be between the middle and about 3/4 of the way to the right. Further to the right is too strong and further to the left (lower) side is too weak.

Having swapped the aerial cables between rooms it looks as though it is just the Sony tv that is the problem so we will just have to live with it.

You could try fitting an attenuator into the aerial lead feeding the Sony. They are avauilable from a number of sources including Maplins, RS, Amazon, etc and are quite inexpensive. Try a 6 dB one first and then check whether you can get all the channels again. If not then check the signal strengths of the 'missing' channels again. If they are still to strong try adding a 3 dB in series, but if they are too weak replace the 6 dB with a 3 dB. You could try a variable attenuator but they are nbot always reliable in my experience.

Re Channel 5 USA on Freeview channel 21.
Since 14/05/2019, this has been unwatchable as there has been no sound and extremely broken picture, consisting of small rectangles and squares. I have retuned my television, but this has made no difference. Is this a known problem.

David Moir: It's impossible for anyone to say whether there is a known fault as you haven't said where you are or which transmitter you're using (please provide a full postcode). Also, retuning will never fix a fault like this as your TV was already correctly tuned (by retuning you're just deleting the channel list and searching for them again, which can often make the problem worse). Have you checked for any loose or damaged cables or connections behind your TV?

The cables and connections are all O.K.
There is now no picture or sound on Channel 5USA. Other channels are fine.

I am trying to find an email contact (UK) for 5USA Ch.21 to ask them a simple question as follows:-
I have become a strong fan of the splendid Hospital Drama "Grey's Anatomy" which used to be shown usually at 10pm or sometimes at 9pm etc. Now suddenly without any warning nor explanation the programme has been shunted to midnight and later. Most of us cannot stay up that late and some like myself have no means to record it to watch it in the daytime.
Can you give me an email address for them or answer my question yourself.
